Hello everyone. I want to share with you a change in my direction with painting. I went with Tim (Freak) to Martyn\'s (Wargriffon\'s) house last week, and I witnessed a kind of miniature Shangri-La. His house, for those who know, is like a shrine to painting and modelling. If I counted right, there are 4 or 5 cabinets of painted goods downstairs and several other cabinets of rarities upstairs in a room that is completely and utterly given over to the hobby I loved as a teenager but kind of fell out with at various points thereafter, particularly after doing that job for a year with Stone Circle (which sharpened my painting a lot, but also did for me in the energy stakes - I just couldn\'t really be arsed painting after a year of it). Well, after seeing both Tim\'s bombsite of a painting and sculpting area, and then witnessing Martyn\'s incredible grotto, I felt a stirring in me that I hadn\'t felt for a long time - excitement for the hobby. Coupled with my recent foray into HeroQuest with Shel\'s (my girlfriend) son and nephew (they absolutely loved it) things are suddenly happening again for me. I went to town with the lads last week (both of them are 12yrs old) and bought some extra brushes for them to dabble with and a few minis for them to attack on the dining room table. I cleaned up two Dwarf Hammerers for them and got them started and found myself faffing about with a couple of options but holding back from actually starting to paint (a proper mental block, doing everything BUT what I knew I should be doing). In the end though, I cleaned up an Ork Runtherd from the old Squig Katapult from the early 90\'s. He\'s not got an arm on one side (I need to find something for him) but I dived in, coated him, and spent an hour or so on his head. I was so happy with the result I couldn\'t stop grinning. The lads were asking for help a lot so I took time to get paint on in the right places with them, but I was really wrapped up in my own work as well, and the result left me thinking WHY HAVEN\'T I PAINTED FOR MYSELF THESE LAST 6 OR 7 YEARS! It really got its claws into me, and I\'m thinking of what to do next when I finish shift today. Shel is chuffed as well just to see me doing something that relaxes me so much. I\'m really keen now to push on, secure an arm, work onto his clothing, and try and get a completed piece in the next few weeks (got to be realistic, like).
I\'ve gone through my gallery, trimmed the stuff in there down to the material that represents my style, got rid of some other stuff that was put through my name by Stone Circle/Griffin Games for other people and spent some time questioning my sanity for having stopped painting in the first place. I know the reasons and accept them, but I should have pushed harder to get back into it for myself. Altogether, I now consider myself back painting in some capacity at least, and I\'ll be looking to bother folk about it all soon enough.
This time I\'m back for good I hope!
