A sweet deal

So a new friend I met through gaming asked me to paint his trollblood army, 65 figures or so very detailed models. I said sure didn't talk price since it was going to be my first commission work and I just like to paint. He supplied me with a box of his vallejo paints. I am use to the gw paints but after using his i really like the vallejo more. Took 5 weeks but I didn't count the hours. So I gave him his models, and he loved what I did, and in return he gave me a new box of Vallejo model color paints the full series of about 200 paints. I am a happy painter.

I reckon that's the road to happy commisions. (Non-professional, obviously). I do much the same thing for my friends here. I paint a mini, and they pay me in minis to the value of whatever they think the paint job is worth. No niggling over how much a paint job is worth. You paint it cos you enjoy it, they pay you cos theyre happy you painted it. Everyone's a winner :)

Thats a great paint set to get as payment, I have only just started using Vallejo, I have GW as well. I like the vallejo bottles more, but you have to shake the hell out of them first. GW are quick to dry up but still great paints.

Tim - when are we going to see some new stuff from you??? Looking forward to seeing more!

He told me a neat little trick for shaking those paints. Get a small glass bead, not metal, and insert it into the bottle by carefully removing the dropper lid. Instant agitator.

Ahh, okay thanks, not sure I will do it though lol! I have seen some people make a paint shaker with a motor, seems like overkill to me lol.

although i add a bit of metal sprue to all mine as an agitator (no probs so far but it's only about 5 yrs old) i find a normal shake ineffective. i find the best way to mix them is to smack the bottom of the bottle into the palm of your hand. a few solid hits will do

Shake using your wrist not your forearm, it's far more effective (thrash guitar riffing improves the technique :D )

Nope I belive they are more tintet to silver, just shake well and I generally add a little gold yellow (Or something like that) from the same range of colour to get some more "gold" into the colour. Sometimes a little bit green into the mix also. But Vallejo metalics AIR are very nice.
I bought the gold in the air series and it looks silver. Did I get a bad batch or something?

when i first got the gold, i hated it...
it was too bright, and very dominant compared to the other paints i used...
now i've learned how to use it better...

a basic gold recipe would go like this:

P3 Battlefield Brown- basecoat
P3 BB + Rhulic Gold (1 to 1)- layer
P3 Rhulic Gold- layer
P3 Flesh Wash (this has a nice purple/maroon tone to it, and doesn't dry so matte as the GW Leviathan Purple wash)- heavy wash
P3 RG + Vallejo Air Gold (2 to 1)- layer
P3 Flesh Wash medium wash (add a bit of water to the wash)
P3 RG + Vallejo Air Gold (2 to 1)- layer
VA Gold (here is where the gold really starts to pop)- layer
P3 Flesh Wash- light wash (really thin this one down, a few layers give a bit of life to the metal)
VA Aluminium- highlight

i'm finding that i want to be able to get a few brighter, more powerful highlight spots on the gold, which the Aluminium is not giving me, so my next buy will be some of the VA metal medium to use as a pure highlight (or maybe even add a little white to...
i'm sure that Vallejo has plenty of alternatives to any of the P3 colors i use...
the most important part is just to use the pure gold more as a first highlight than a basecoat color...
it may work well as a base for juicing over though, but that is not my style i may have to try it out and see if i like the results:)...

best of luck with all your new paints:)...

cheers
