A table for home and a campaign for war

The campaign for the Sartoris System has begun! Some friends and I are waging war against one another in a 40k campaign and one of the sites for the conflict is the moon, Reach, as seen below. All battles for the territory tile on Reach will be played on my private table, which is really cool because a true narrative can be developed when many battles are fought on the same battlefield. I hope there'll be moments when we're playing and we'll say, "oh that's where I slayed your demon prince," and, "this was the site of brother-captain Hrung's last stand!" Check out my blog to see a full detailing of our campaign and more pictures of Reach at midwestmonsterlab.blogspot.com!

Nothing like a finely wrought games table to warm the cockles of your heart :)

Very nice work, there. Out of interest, is it all flocked? If so, do you not find that the flock rubs off something awful? I've never done an all-flock table before, and in fact my current one is a desert, so there aint a lot of vegetation going on at all, but I'm considering doing a kinda swampy one for warmachine (I play Cryx) and Malifaux, so I'd been toying with flocking it. Would you recommend it?

Flock does rub off, usually. You can help prevent it by spraying a few layers of watered down white or wood glue over the flock, after it is on the surface. Allowing it to set/dry between coats.

Over coating sand with glue and painting it green would last longer. The best option I've seen was at the local GW, they used a stone texture paint to cover the table. You can get the stuff at craft stores or paint stores, in brush on or spray cans.

Oh, and awesome table, by the way!

my desert table is done with sand/glue/bit of cement to stick it together/paint mix. It looks fine, especially after a good deal of drybrushing, but its a nightmare for minis falling over. Ya fall on that (basically, sandpaper table), and the paint comes off. every time :(

i was wondering if maybe flock would be a bit kinder to the minis.

Me_in_japan, yes the table is flocked and I would recommend it. I didn't do any sealing technique when I made the table 8 years ago, and as you can see it hasn't been worn barren yet! When I applied the flock I was pretty liberal with it and let it set naturally, there is some excess for sure, but it looks fine and doesn't hinder game play. It is nice when your models tip over onto something softer than sealed rock.. though since everything will be either resin or plastic in the GW range in the near future I see that as a decreasing problem for the years to come.

Thanks for the kudos guys!
