If the commercialism, greed, stress, and forced jollity of the holiday season turns you off (as it does many of us), why not take it as an opportunity to do some charitable work or donation, or just be generous to somebody who needs it? There are Sally Ann bell ringers all over the place... Or make a scrumptious donation to the local food bank - Next week is the holiday Eid al-Adha, when Muslims traditionally sacrificed their best animals and gave the meat to the poor. If you are obliged to give Christmas or Chanukah gifts, OXFAM and World Vision both have gift programs, where your donation buys farm animals, family supplies, or training for people in the developing world.
