Laundry blue is/was used to counteract the natural tendency of white fabric to yellow (toward a kind of sienna colour) when it got grubby over time. This is an interesting illustration of colour theory in action, since violet-blue is the complement of yellow.Mourner said:i know that you can make you paint appear whiter by mixing in a small amount of blue, (washing powder for white laundry always has small blue particles in it for the same reason), hope that helps.
Some painters believe that adding a tiny hint of the complementary colour of the surrounding colour to white highlights make them \'pop\' more but I don\'t buy it for a couple of reasons. First, with something already very white like white paint anything added to it will just make it darker, even if only slightly. Secondly, in order for the simultaneous-contrast thing to kick in you have to have enough of the colour added for it to be noticeable, which obviously would mean the \'white\' would now be quite a distance from white.
Anyone interested in having a look, easy side-by-side test:
paint a scrap of something a brilliant cyan or turquoise, apply a do of pure white and a dot of white + scarlet/orange-red;
paint a scrap of something ultramarine or violet-blue, apply a dot of pure white and a dot of white + bright yellow;
paint something green, apply a dot of pure white and a dot of white + magenta.
Then compare, see what you think yourself.
Something else interesting to look at is just white versus a small dot of white applied to a larger dot of white + complement (so that a ring of the tinted complement is left visible), that I think can work well but the smaller you go the less useful this is.
That\'s why it\'s very dark - glossier = darker, matter = lighter. Shoot it with Dullcote and it\'ll look just like Vellejo or another very matt paint. Start with any dark paint in a matt finish and brush some water over it, while it\'s still wet it\'ll appear very much darker; that\'s the same thing in reverse.Queenoftheunifrogs said:Tamaya black is very dark but unfortunately its also glossy
