We have talked about this before. Does anyone remember this thread? GD Styles which is best?

To make it quick;

(A)US Style (Cartoon flash, extreme highlights, glitz and glam, see Bobby Wong)
(B)French/Euro Style (Rackham-esque, nmm, pastel shades, lots of Nurgle, see Allan C and Cyril)
(C)UK style (Gritty realism, blood spattered weapons, rusty real metallics, see Tammy Haye and Jakob Nielson)

uhm...

the winning french entries do NOT use NMM...

look at the past couple years winners..

europe they like realism..so they use metallics and washes but with TONS of freehand and sculptures.

Canada/USA seems to be moving towards the NMM...

I actually agree with Tammy that there is are national styles and that someone using an American style may not do well in England (this is not to say that all americans paint in an american style). However, being ever stuborn, I\'m going to assume that is a trend rather than a rule.

I just like to keep my goal of an eventual demon in UK a possibility :D

So the UK style is Dutch and Scandinavian is it? Bloody hell! That\'s a right shocker :D Have a look towards Spacemunkie, Buddle, Sturmhalo et al for a UK style, and Petethemighty (God bless his brush). That\'s more of the UK style, but again each is quite styled to their own look. But regardless, good painting wins awards, so Tammy is being a bit precious on this one :D

@Braveheart - I knew we had more in common than arguments lol This is a good time to reflect now that we\'ve seen eye-to-eye - may there be many more in future ;)

Its not like its written in stone.Someone always does something different. This is what people have noticed about different country\'s painting technique over the years.It doesn\'t just the last two years.

Yes to some extent there are national styles. We minic what we see. When starting to paint, if all I see is american style painting then that is how I am going to learn how to paint. I may adapt it to my own abilities and likes but it will refect the american style of painting. The same goes for any other country. Each style has its good and bad points.

There\'s also Joe Hill, Seb Perbet, Matt Parkes, and, my favourite, Martin Footitt. I\'m sure most of those guys are from the UK, and they also paint \'UK style\'.

I never thought metals were boring - i just saw NMM as a nice alternative lol

Good point though, as it does work that way to some extent!

Not trying to be argumentitive(yes i am) but what do you mean by that?

Do you mean that had he \'done\' his homework, he would\'ve known that an \'American\' style would never place in the UK? Or that \'OTT\' stuff doesn\'t make it in the UK?

Of course, its all moot, since it was disqualified...We\'ll never know if it would have placed or not....

This is just one more nail in GW\'s coffin. First Alexi, then this guy (he\'s a NY lawyer? Then his wife DEFINATELY cheats on him). They should just post this on their site and in their competitions -

From now on, any artist producing work better then a six on CMON need not bother to enter our competitions; or for that matter, even play our games. Our games are made for everyday people, and your OTT artistic talents are neither appreciated nor asked for. Mediocracy is the key to our companies success, and your incredible paint jobs do not belong on our inferior models.

I\'m not sure it is right that people are using this as another reason to bash GW. After all, being a GD winner means that the model will feature in GW publications (at the very minimum th GD winners booklet). By including the models in these publications, GW could be seen as endorsing the imagery/iconography they contain. As a result, GW surely have to draw a line somewhere (as was mentioned earlier, public image is very important to any large company)

As for GW being snobbish and preferring to only award mediocre paintjobs that fit their narrow criteria - I\'m not at all convinced this is true. I myself believe this miniature was only excluded from winning because GW thought it may have caused offence - in the end it would have been GW themselves that would have received any complaints, not the artist that produced the piece.

What you say is very true KingM, but it doesn\'t take much nowadays for an old fashion GW bashin! Now, wheres me pitchfork and torch!
