Just got some Tamiya acrylic paint thinner today, any tips for using it and is it o.k. to use with GW and Vallejo paints? cheers.

Tamiya\'s paints and the type of stuff the hobby generally uses are not the same thing. For a start the \'acrylics\' we commonly use are vinyl paints in reality, not true acrylics.

Test it: might work fine, might make a mess.

But remember, just water works pretty well!

I\'ve used the Tamiya Acrylic thinner for thinning GW paints for putting through my airbrush.......no problems

I have heard of people using distilled water to thin paints. For painting with an old fashioned brush, not an air brush, is there really an appreciable difference?

Depends on the quality of your tap water. For me, there would be no obvious difference.

I use distilled water to thin my Vallejos for regular painting

Round this way, the water is, as they say, hard

Ditto what Ritual said - very soft water here so tapwater works just fine.

If you have hard water you could get tide marks or similar problems.

I think the question was
Is water ok to use to thin paints for an airbrush?
Yes.
If you have adhesion problems, use a bit of airbrush medium to increase the binder.
Drying too slow, use a bit of alcohol instead of water.
Drying too fast, use a bit of retarder in your water.

I have been trying this stuff out. It is great for diluting inks, makes it spread alot more even. It can also be used with mig pigments to make washes, it helps the pigments stick to the model.

I had high hopes for acrylic thinner, but im left cold. You can get good results if you spend the time getting the ratios right, but then again, the exact same can be said of water. Keeping the mix to just paint+water is just so much easier and I for one cant see any difference in the end reult.
