Advanced basing for beginners

Hey all

After my first and recent entry onto cmon (brother Claudio) it was definitely apparent that I need to do some work on my basing.

For my next project, I want to take the basing on too.
It is going to be a single piece and I am wanting to mount the model and base on a decorative wooden block (single mini Golden demon sized)

The core of the base I envisage will be a section of old cobbled path

My first two questions are

How do you guys make these cobbley/path type areas?
Where can I get the wooden mounting blocks from?

For Cobbly paths, three ways off the top of my head. Listed easiest to most difficult:
1. Buy a cobblestone base from a vendor (secret weapon miniatures, scibor, etc...)
2. Use textured plasticard (Plastruct, Evergreen, etc...)
3. Sculpt it yourself from epoxy putty (greenstuff, milliput, magic sculpt, etc...)

For wooden plinths:
1. Check local Arts & Crafts stores. You don't display what country you're in in your user ID. In the U.S. Michael's, A.C. Moore, or Hobby Lobby would be good to check.
2. An on-line shop recently started selling these (I think it may have been Secret Weapon Miniatures)
3. Make them yourself if you have access to the correct woodworking tools and a decent Home Improvement Shop with a good Lumber Yard.

Take my advice with a grain of salt as I'm new at this, but use a poly clay like sculpey... They have plastic texture sheets that you can use, bake, then paint. They also have wood patterns, and many more...

for wooden bases I used simply the closest DIY shop.
I bought a 2.7m long (50x50mm) decorwood-log (sorry no idea how it's called in english) for about 4 euro, and asked them if they could cut it up for me to 10cm pieces for free. They did and I walked out with 27 pieces of wooden blocks.
One warning though: they turned out to be too high. About 7cm would have been ideal, 10 is too much.

If you'd like to make your own cobblestone path, as bloodhowl said, milliput, greenstuff, magic sculpt, etc would work. I'd take a piece of baking paper, put your sculpting material of choice on it, and then roll it out (a rolling pin would be helpful here). Let it dry a little, don't want it to be too soft, and then take a pointy tool (an awl or similar sculpting tool) and draw in some cobblestones. Different sizes, shapes. You can use a knife to pick out the gaps between them. You're not trying to cut out the individual stones, by the way, just draw the outlines. You can use an old tooth brush to give them some texture. Press the bristles into the clay, rub it on the surface, etc. I think this also works better once the clay has begun to harden more.

Just experiment and see what gives you the look you want.

Thanks guys, that's given me plenty to think about.
If I'm interested in entering the single mini categories for GD2013, does the mini need to remain mounted on its original slottabase (albeit nicely decorated!)?

Simple answer is yes :) All entries must be on a standard gaming base. However there is nothing to stop you creating a little "scene" with a hole for the miniature to sit into (using something like a magnet so its removable).

All of the above tips work for sure, this is just another to add in. I made this cobblestone floor by taking different sized balls of epoxy putty and placing them on the base (space them apart a bit) and then just pressed them together till they touched. This makes sure that the stones will be random not only in size but also shape and texture. Hope this helps.
