Advice for selling an army...?

I\'ve been thinking about selling my army of Necrons. I still like em and all, but I have a number of reasons to clear off my shelves a bit. I haven\'t totally decided yet though.

but at any rate, I have no idea how I can figure out how much to charge. I want it to be all or nothing. I have about 2000 points worth, fully painted, a bunch of custom conversions especially on the destroyers. I think it\'s about $450 worth of models, if you were to buy em retail. But with the time I spent on them and the quality of the paint jobs and conversions, how can I figure out a good price for my time and effort, without it seeming like a ripoff? Anyone have any experience selling stuff? Any advice?

Advice for selling an army...

Hi,
If at all possible you should try to sell it locally. Main reason is that people can really see what they are getting for their money. Unfortunately you rarely get what its worth selling an army unless you get really lucky in finding someone who really wants your it... take a look at ebay for painted armies and see how pathetic most bids are on them Ebay and Bartertown (www.bartertown.org) are good places to advertise, but if you\'re doing it online it is really important you have good pics. Most people just don\'t want to pay what you might think its really worth. Good luck, and I hope circumstances prove me wrong...

Well, I have enough gaming stores around that I\'m sure I\'d be able to sell it locally. One store that I know of even has painted armies for sale, some have been in the cabinet for a year now, others last a week or so. The biggest thing for me is that I at least want my money investment back for em and I paid retail for everything

To me it depends on if it\'s painted or not, then if it is, whether every fig is up to standard... If an army was painted on ebay, for example and it looked horrible, than it would not be worth my time to strips them and repaint them.

However, I believe people would like already assembled armies because that\'s half of the steps to painting it. Also, if the army had a bunch of conversions, I\'m sure you would be set apart form others.

I definatly see how local would be better, Katie as the shipping would be horrendous if it was a big army.

Here\'s a few tips.

1) Put it up on ebay with an acceptable starting price. If it doesn\'t sell the first week It just might sell the second and that weeks free.

2)Put the pics from your website up here and link em through to ebay. Every little bit helps.

3)Don\'t put a reserve on the auction, just set your price. I\'ve found that confidence comes across better than guessing how much the sellor wants. It also cuts down on the stress of \"Will it reach my accepted price or am I losing my shirt\"

If none of these things work piecemeal it out by unit. Odds are you will get better prices that way.

I looked at your pics by the way and very nice. I don\'t promise it will work, but, I would almost put the whole army up for $750 the first week just to see what kind of response you get. One paying bidder is all you need and you have the second free week to look like it\'s priced to sell.

Above all, make your ad clear, concise and professional it really makes a difference. lol

750 is about what I\'d hope to get, max. More would be nice but I don\'t think I\'d get that lucky. I was thinking of starting the bidding at 600 and just see how it goes. Should I start it at 750? Also, those pictures on my site aren\'t all that great, quality wise. They look way better in person (not to brag or anything). So, I\'d be taking all new pictures and trying to get really nice photos if I can. I was also thinking of buying an Army Transport case and cutting out the inserts so the army fits in the case perfectly, and ship it in the case and everything. And of course I\'d add $50 to the price to cover the case

I\'d guess my investment in the army after that would be around $500. I\'m not out to make a big profit, but I just don\'t want to lose money when all is said and done.

I\'m guessing you mean $750 US... which I think might be a bit much for it. Some of the models look great, others not so much. Still, I don\'t think eBay charges if it doesn\'t sell so I don\'t think there\'s any harm in trying

By the way, how did you make that logo for your site? Looks really cool

Why not break the army up into its component units and sell them all individually? That way you\'re selling complete units and will hopefully get a higher price overall! People might not pay £500 for an army, but they might pay £50 for a well painted unit!

well I didn\'t want to break up the army because the whole thing has a special theme and they all go together. If I had painted them up like generic necrons then maybe that would be more doable. Also, I don\'t want to be stuck with 1 or 2 units that no one wanted to buy, I\'d rather get rid of everything
