Hiya,

I am working on the plastic GW giant and theres a little too much flesh on the arse area for my liking!

I have had the idea to paint a burnt on brand on his behind, like what cowboys do to cows with a red hot poker, but haven\'t got a clue how to do this!!! has anyone got any ideas/tips?

Well if you did a fresh burn it would be red so do it like a wound with red then mixed to flesh color. The I would do a purple wash to show a bit of bruising and a red wash to bring the hot flesh look back.

other wise do it a very dark grey/brown for a scabbed over brand. Old brands would be whitish like most scar tissue.

Hope it helps.

First... a collage of cattle brand used in the US, may come in helpful :D

Brand_Collage_a.gif

It says please give credit to Devil\'s Rope Museum, so I will. Officially chartered in 1991 as The Historical Museum Of Barbed Wire and Fencing Tools, the organization is a 501 (a) (1), tax exempt, non-profit entity dedicated to preserving the history and artifacts of barbed wire. The museum was created, renovated, filled, and is maintained by barbed wire collectors from the United States, Australia, and Canada

Second, what one looks like on the cow:

Third, an interesting article on \"freeze branding\":

As for painting it, I\'d go for blackish with a reddened rim, it\'d be less hairy than a cow. I really have no idea, but I hope my research comes in helpful :D

Or try this link to a \"body modification artist\" website. It has pics of healed brands.

I think to make it realistic you will have to add a thickener to your paint so the brand is raised.

Steve Hayworth\'s gallery of brands

p.s. some of his stuff is not for the squeemish - and others is totally for the extreme star trek fan!

One thing to bear in mind is not to copy that web reference to closely as I am sure the warhammer world has a little es hygiene standards than our own..Although jdging by that site really not as crazy.
Use colours such as reds and browns with a touch of purple for the bruising.
use a little black in the odd spot to indicate real burning.
For adding a little texture you could mix a little PVA in with the paint...

Alternatively you could make the relif on the model with greenstuff..

WOW!!! thanks for all the advice!

Thats some crazy messed up stuff there but exactly what I was after!

Cheers for the designs too Bill, but I\'m gonna settle on an orky skull motif to tie in with the background a bit more.

Decided to go for a more fresh brand with burns and bruising and all, hust so its a bit more obvious what I am trying to achieve. Will also try a little PVA in the paint as I have spent ages painting his skin already (16 layers and I only went a little insane!) and am reluctant to balls it up now with green stuff.

Thanks again, will try and post a pic when done.

Check craft stores for a paint thickener for acrylics. I have some from that brand every craft store carries and folks use for terrain. I forget what it\'s called now, but you can get thickeners.
I haven\'t tried mixing pva and paint but I\'d worry about what that would do to my paint brush.

www.bmezine.com sure do have alot of pics of branding under scarification/branding.

and thats all done on human skin.

to make it look real you should not try to creathe intricate patterns since branding is crap at detailed designs, for detailed designs i/cutters use skinpeeling and or cutting.

a freshly made brand is not red at all as you will see in the galleries. the surrounding areas are red but the branded area is not.

tribal people mostly used branding as a way to decorate themselves with the keloided scars it give so some kind och risen texture is also good.

steve uses mostly pens for brands, the traditional is much more hardcore.

That looks painfull, ouch:D

its pretty painless.
the thing used for branding proffessionally is heated to about 1200 degrees celsius before pressed into the skin, this burns off the nerves in milliseconds and thus the branded area feels little to no pain, the surrounding area feels a slight burning sensation.

oooh. much better gallery than I found. Better in that it has more variety anyway.

I think the key to consider is whether you are doing recent or healed branding. Sounds like you want recent.

It\'s been an education, this. I would never do that to myself, and don\'t find it at all attractive on others, but hey, do unto yourself whatever the hell you want I say. Anyway I learned the word \"keloided\" and can\'t wait to use it in Scrabble.

Tattoo\'s and Piercings I can understand.
Brandings, Scarification and Implants I just don\'t get. :|~

(I\'ve got enough scars just through living thank you, without adding more voluntarily!)

Have just performed a dry fit of the gubbins that I am going to stick on the giant, and it turns out that both rumps will be hidden by a cow and a halfling sack so all has been for nowt!

Thanks for all the tips though, I may just paint it on anyway!

Have to say I am with Dragonsreach on this one regarding implants, but each to their own I suppose!

The implants is why I made the comment about Star Trek fans. I could really see someone getting a Klingon brow ridge implanted.

The think I always wonder with extreme body modification is: how do you get a job?

Oh, and I see very little difference between scarification and tattooing. One does minor damage to surface nerves but that\'s it as far as I can see.
