Advice on painting the inside of cloaks

So Im trying to to paint a dark angels company master and I noticed that the cloak hangs over the body and it is obviously molded with metal from the cloak into the body. There is no gap. Looking from the front or back you will not see it. But from the side it is obvious the cloak is solid with no space between the cloak the body.

What color does one paint this? Would it be painted pure black to denote empty space?

I would personally leave it black, it works for me, but my style of painting Marines is very cartoony. Individual results may vary.

I\'m having trouble picturing what you mean from your description...

Do you mean to say there SHOULD be a gap IRL, but due to the moulding process, the cloak is attached...?

Can you include some pictures?

Dan, you\'re dead on with the description. I figure that area shouldnt be the same color as the cloak since in real life it wouldn\'t really exist. So a flat black with no shading?

Rather than Flat Black try using a much darker version of the top colour and then fake deep shadow by mixing in the complementary colour and working a graduation to the centre of the area.

I would agree with Dragonsreach about the black. It would probably look too harsh and accenuate the problem rather than hide it. A darker shade of the exterior colour would also work well.

I am not certain about the specifics of the figure but if you see the inside of the cloak on another part of the figure and you have painted that a different colour to the outside of the cloak then a darker version of that would do well. IE if the outside of the cloak is offwhite and the inside is red then you could paint that bit you have described as a dark red.

mix in some dark purple to the cloak shadow color - much as DR has advised. This will bring it near-black without the starkness of being black.

I would leave it black, personally.

Whatever you choose to paint it, I would recommend that when you take a photograph from the side, leave the stronger of your light sources at the rear of the model, that way that area will be much darker (from being in slight shadow) and should look nicer in the photograph.
