Advise in painting clothing / armour on IG troopers

Hi,

I need a bit of advise on how to get the clothing and armour of this guy a bit more interesting.

SGT_Front_Back.JPG

I\'ve painted the armour dark angels green over black under coat. Then Catachan green, finally highlighting the edges with Camo green.

Clothes are painted Graveyard Earth over black under coat. Then Desert yellow, finally highlighting with Bleached bone.

The problem is that it doesn\'t seem to do the trick...?

Please give your advise on how to improve the quality of the painting of this miniature.

Doesn\'t look too bad (From those small pics!! Although there is a universal green tinge :p)

I would recommend simply referring to pics of modern (20th-21st Century) armed forces as reference.

As for the actual PAINTING ITSELF - I can\'t see good enough from those pics :/ Sorry

I also need some advise / ideas for the left shoulder pad. I want to paint something to represent each squad and roman numbers sux.

Maybe you need to break the \"green\" cycle there :)
For example, do the chainsword in some other color: black, metallic, or the ever-popular black/yellow stripes... just lose the green overkill...
Also, you might try doing some camo on the undergarments, just to break it up... for example, an easy one would be Camo Green/Scorched Brown/Bleached Bone (Camo Green base, then apply spots of BB, then SB)... should do the trick...

Hope that helps

As I\'m spending most of my time on IG commission work these days I don\'t see anything you\'ve done \"wrong.\"

Breaking things up a bit would certainly help though. I recommend not making fellas blonde, for isntance, as the yellow will blend with the green. Godlikebuthumble is correct too that changing the weapons will help.

Maybe try a brown wash in the recesses of the cloth to shade a bit more?

As for squad identifiers - how many do you have? I see a heart on this one - what about using the 4 card suits?

6 troop choices with multiple squads - In other words quite a few. I was thinking about a number, letter or symbol for the troop and one for squad? I don\'t mind free handing all the models, as long as the motive relatively simple - Those shoulder pads are awfully small...

1.1 1.2 2.1 just seems a bit boring.

Really this is quite nice already, fricking spiffy-cool if the intended use is tabletop gaming.

Further to Godlikebuthumble\'s statement of breaking the green, I suggest picking something out in a dark/medium grey. The grey will provide enough difference to seperate the part but will blend in enough so as not to jump out at you. Keep it small, the shoulder pads or the chest plates for example. Anyway, just my 2 cents/pents/whatever.

He looks good, if I may say, change the hair colour, and try leaving out the desert yellow in the uniforms.
The armour is great the way you have done it, maybe do a light wash of scab red 15 parts water 1 part scab red on the face to bring out some colour in his cheeks, and on the hands. Keep at it they look great:D

As for squad identifiers, why not use a simple geometric colour scheme...?

Ie.
Squad 1, Sergeant : White square
Squad 1, Corporal/Squad leader : White rectangle beside red rectangle
Squad 1, Special weapon : White rectangle beside blue rectangle

Squad 2, Sergeant: Red rectangle beside white rectangle
Squad 2, Corporal/Squad leader: Red square

Or something like that - not very exciting, but simple, and easy to do on small surfaces - just be sure to use contrasting colours

As a unit these guys will look cool.
nice one nothing to add to the advice above..except maybe detail up the bases making each one different always helps just keep em simple with an overlying theme.

Hi,

Thnx to everybody who chipped in with advise and suggestions. Your advise have contributed to this mini diorama:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/136103

I\'ve just opened a Cadian Battleforce, and the minis in there will give me plenty of opportunity to work with the clothing and armour.

I\'ve decided on what to paint on the shoulder pads. I\'ll use numbers and symbols. A bullet for ordinary troopers. a fireball for fire support / special weapons and a star for HQ.
