Africa

i all fairness africas woes started centuries ago. \"the man\" wasn\'t around then.

as for aid to africa, it\'s a drop in the ocean to what they owe to banks etc. it\'s an interesting problem in that counries that go bankrupt make big headaches for everyone around them. so the world banks keep lending them money so they don\'t becoming a huge problem. so they stay in a nasty borrowing cycle they could never afford to get out of. just like many citizens of first world countries.

sorry trevor but the vast majority of the worlds wealth comes from people. if you lose that many then you end up with a small number of poor people. lol

Now there is something we completely agree on - africans have to do it for themselves. Initiatives like NEPAD are gaining momentum, and african countries, in general, desire international success for Africa. It\'s just that to do so, there are so many cultural and philosophical boundaries that will need to fall - it\'s not something that can be told, it needs to be experienced, and it can fill me with despair at times.

Edit: Perhaps the biggest mistake that a person can make in a topic like this is, equating nationality and race. I am african, though my mother has scottish blood, and my father has irish. My cousin (bless her lily white arse), was born here and now lives in the US as a true african-american. It\'s the mistake that Bob Mugabe made. His people are starving and he blames \'drought\' whilst the previously white-owned farms are producing jungle and savanna with astonishing fertility.

If I have heard correctly, alot of the aid that\'s sent to Africa ends up in the hands of some warlord and never makes it to the people it\'s intended for....amazing.
Sadly, the mammoth debts a lot of developing countries have are also the responsibility of those strongmen, who used the money to build their armies, or on western-encouraged \"infrastructure\" that now sits useless or benefits only an elite few. So not only is there no money, any democratically-elected government is faced with the \"sins of the father\" so to speak - the debts incurred by the former tyrants, much of which left the country in one form or another but still must be repaid by the same people those dictators terrorized. The debts dwarf any humanitarian aid we give them, so in the long run the developed world makes a huge profit off the backs of Africans and every other developing area on the planet.

Its one thing to pick apart a debate, and quite another to pick on a poster.

I\'m not a heavy handed moderator by any means, but it needs to stop.

No, he didn\'t, unless you actually are looking to be offended.
He specifically acknowledged that one person that he knows of is a geo politics major.
He also specifically mentioned that the vast majority who are not geo-politicians have given thoughtful answers without being flippant or insulting.

Now cut it out or I shall grab my spear and go Shaka Zulu on your butts. (The gun anology didn\'t work as well with this topic.lol)

A large percentage of riffs between personalities get handled without moderation on this site. I was hoping this would also be the case here.

Just because Dammekkos says it, doesn\'t make it true, or make it the opinion of everyone else on the board, and vice versa.

You are certainly entitled to whatever opinion you may have, but these types of debates get heated sometimes...but that is not the starting point for name calling or leaving the forums talk.

I really don\'t get it. It\'s possible to have opinions and opine about them WITHOUT pissing other people off. Not only is it possible, it is SIMPLE.

I think they\'re just trying to lighten the situation. I doubt that offence was meant.

@Evil Dave, you\'re probably right. My interpretation of it.

Basically, there were these blokes in red uniforms, called the British. After a series of wars in which we shot a load of nutters armed with spears whilst singing \"Men of Harlech\" we owned quite a bit of Africa. After WW2 it became too much of a burden on the British empire to keep these countries that we owned running, so we decided to pull our troops and administration out and let the africans rule themselves. Unfortunatly the people who took over from the British were corrupt and the power went to thier heads. Rather than spending money on improving the lives of thier people, those in power spent the money on themselves, building palaces whilst thier people died of diseases that should have been exterminated centuries ago. With no money to spend on schools, there was no education, without hospitals, no health care and without strong government support there is no law and order. When the white farmers who remained were kicked off thier land, the farms fell to wrack and ruin because the natives didnt know how to farm the land or use machinery.

Sure the african nations may have been in advance of us when we were killing each other with swords and bows, but we progressed whilst they stayed where they were.

For once its the British\'s fault for leaving a country instead of invading it ;)

More than all, I already bowed down and left you the field, to have all the one sided discoursing that you wanted to have with those you deem are so better instructed as I am, so why do you come back with over a 1000 words of complete dismissal ???

Fair enough, I probably didn\'t need to write that, I thought my first one line response was more succinct, but it got deleted.

It\'s not even a very long post. I\'d say it\'s got less words than yours, the fact that it is logically set into counter-points may make it seem more intense or something. DR does this all the time, only the context here is different because I am disagreeing with you.

I\'m not trying to flame-bait or wotnot, I am sure the various threads on abortion, gun control, etc etc would provide ample opportunity for that, should anyone feel the urge. This post was made from genuine curiosity, something that I\'ve wondered for a while. I would prefer discourse along the lines of FrenchKid, Farseerlum, and others. If you want to insult me though I have no problem defending my curiosity.

The sad thing is, I\'m pretty sure that it was Modderhu\'s response to your post that incited your rant against my post.

I\'ve moved this thread back into general circulation.

I\'ve tried asking politely to stop with the personal attacks, apparently I\'m an ass if I leave the thread, and an ass if I remove it.

The point is made, you two can either let it go and continue to further the discussion of Africa, or I will have to close the thread completely.

It\'s a catch 22, Jim.
The one thing I always think about when Africa is mentioned:

Ee-e-e-um-um-a-weh
Ee-e-e-um-um-a-weh
Wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh (4X)

In the jungle, the mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle, the quiet jungle
The lion sleeps tonight

(Come on everybody)

Ee-e-e-um-um-a-weh
Wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh (2X)
Ee-e-e-um-um-a-weh
Wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh, wemoweh (2X)

Go ahead and listen:The Lion Sleeps Tonight

You will all curse my name because you can\'t get it out of your heads.
