I\'ve just seen on the crawl on E tv that
Tobey Maguire has signed on for a live big screen version of \"Robotech\". No dates on shooting or anything like that. By all the dark gods of Hollywood! How can they do a what 27 hour story in 2 and half three hours without messing it all to hell? What parts are they going to keep and which are they going to toss? Are the Zentrati going to be 50ft \"monsters\"? Or are they going with a \"Ming the Mild\" (see the Flash Gordon thread) route? And for that matter, did they ever get the licensing for the Mecha figgered out? Or is the the Veritechs going to look completely different? I\'m thinking that I\'m going to give this a 3 of 10 that not completely destroying the whole concept.

I just hope that I\'m wrong. Ever the optimist

Robotech was an animae series that was brought to the states in the mid 80\'s - it involved many large stompy Mechs doing what mechs do best - stomping stuff. The series spun off 3 or 4 movies (including one that basically summed up the first couple/three seasons of the show) -

If they do one of the movies, especially the first one I can see it working.

Bear in mind that Robotech was a rather bastardized version of the anime series Macross Super Dimensional Fortress, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospaeda all clumped together into one storyline.

I\'m a bit more elitist when it comes to my anime these days, so I\'d really rather watch the original Japanese versions. I\'m open to seeing what they\'ll do with the live action movie, though. Could be fun...

I assume McGuire is taking the Rick Hunter role? Who\'ll be Minmei? There are so few actresses who can capture \"cheerfully annoying\" that well -- AH, Kristen Kruek. Funny how her name instantly pops to mind with the words \"cheerfully annoying.\" lol

i\'m not sure which would be worse in all honesty, the live action re-make, or re-watching all the old DVD\'s and realizing how bad some of the original macross series actually was. listening to minmei whining after 15 or so years and watching the 3 micronized zentradi really makes you view things in a different light. that being said, as long as the director isn\'t michael bay, i\'ll be happy, especially after he killed any nostalgia i felt for the transformers.

But you have to admit that, much as I hate Roy Chubby Brown, the idea of Pootle running round spouting obsceneties at all and sundry does have a certain charm.

Dawn French as Mother Flump, Phill Jupitus as Father Flump, Kelley Osbourne as Posey and Bill Bailey as Perkin. Can you sense the theme running here?
