Ok, I know the site has to pay its bills. No problem have I with that. I even don\'t mind the semi pornographic images from time to time. But when I get a picture of the leading green hypocrite Al Gore asking me to join him in saving the planet, I feel I have to comment.


Why I can hear you asking, do I think Mr. Gore is a hypocrit? Anyone who tells me I have to cut back in my lifestyle and then uses enough electricity a month at his home to run my apartment for 17 months, is in my opinion speaking from his fundament. But he buys carbon offsets, say his press people - yes he does, from a company he helped set up and is a share holder in that has, to the best of my knowledge not planted tree one to offset anyone\'s massive carbon load, let alone the former vice president\'s.

I have to agree with you about Gore. Not much more I can add to what you said.

I heard of a study (it was on the PBS NOVA program) that proved that more CO2 in the atmosphere is actually better for plants. A group of scientists released carbon dioxide in sections of forest (the amount was equal to double the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere currently). The sections that had the CO2 grew twice as fast as the sections that had normal air. Interesting enough, the study was funded by an oil company!

@mattsterbenz: i can attest to the incredible rate of plantgrowth when co2 has been introduced to the growroom, i mean greenhouse:twisted:...

it always makes me laugh when people try to talk green to me...i\'m a surfer from the beach...we have been livin\' green since forever...when your lifestyle is dependent on a clean environment, green talk seems like a bunch of rubbish...talk is cheap...
i\'ve been a vegetarian since i was 16...i\'ve never owned a car...i don\'t waste electricity...i\'ve felt the effects of unclean oceans on my body...i\'ve always recycled, and don\'t litter...
yet, all this is not something that i would preach about..it\'s how ya live that counts, not how ya talk...people are not gonna alter their lifestyle because of the words of some fat cat...
i live the most simple, spartan, lifestyle that i possibly can...mostly so that i don\'t have big bills to worry about...i don\'t like to work for the man, so i have to live a life that needs the least amount of money to sustain...

Well, and my thought on the whole situation is that there are ways to keep a high standard of living, if that is what you want, and at the same time protect the environment.


Ed Begley Jr. is someone I\'m more likely to listen too - his home is solar powered, he uses public transportation, and tries to come up with useful products that are environmentally friendly and less than astronomically priced. And his solution to the problem is not do as I say, not as I do - its heres how we all can live a good life, and not rape the planet.

Al\'s personal usage of electricity is UP 10% over last year. Ironic since he had a big \"greening\" event to get his house more efficient.

Personally, I think we should all cut Algore some slack. So what if he\'s burning up electricity at 20 times the rate of the average American home. He is impotent!

Wait, I think I got that last word wrong. I just wish I could burn that much and be heralded as an environmental champion!

I\'m still snickering about the \"environmental convention\" held somewhere in Southeast Asia a while back. They had so many PRIVATE AIRPLANES flying in that they had to short hop them to other airports for parking.

Al Gore is not the environmental movement. He\'s one human being and like the rest of us he\'s extremely imperfect and fallible. I don\'t care if he\'s a hypocrite or not, it won\'t make the world any less f**ked if we don\'t adjust our lifestyles. Just a reality check, folks.

lol you talk about hypocrites? Who did you vote for and I\'ll show you how the words don\'t meet reality. It\'s not a problem with Al Gore it\'s a general problem with public figures.

Now to be fair if he has had a reconstructing of his home, in other words that his home has been a construction ground, that will cost a lot of energy.

I have to say though that I smirk when I see the comparasion between the \"ecofriendly\" house of Bush vs. Gores leaking energy like a tea-strainer, but in the end it does not make the message less urgent... if you aren\'t 3 years old and think \"but he doesn\'t\" is a viable argumentation that is.

I grew up in the Boy Scouts, and in a troop that was known for it\'s backpacking, so conservation and the environment were just a natural part of my life growing up. I still haven\'t been able to connect my \"no trace\" training with Gore\'s \"pay someone else to not pollute\" approach.

Correct, NSA. However he is the modern face of the environmental movement. He has assumed a leadership position in the movement, and has made huge sums of cash from his speaking engagements dealing with the issue. Yet, he does not practice what he preaches, and therin lies my issue with him.

I\'m not a big fan of leaders Those who seek leadership are way too often least deserving of it. I do think his heart\'s in the right place in that he has genuine concern about the issue. And if you compare his positive impact globally to his personal carbon usage (or whatever), he\'s quite \"in the black\". But of course that\'s not the point.

The really distressing thing is when people use any handle they can to completely discredit the environmental movement. Often these people are the paid shills of recalcitrant industry, just as often they are sneering reactionaries who are trying to get a personal thrill out of hippie-bashing. I know that isn\'t the case with anyone here, fortunately, but it is a real problem because these types can turn back people who are a little on the fence and might be starting to think \"I wonder if maybe there\'s something to this hybrid car nonsense?\" and thus do a lot of damage.

Although, IMO, the environmental movement needs to step back from the religious fervor, and try to work with the population, not beat them into submission.

agreed steelcult....that\'s why i don\'t preach my lifestyle to anybody...i just enjoy it...the religious fervor of any movement lends itself to criticism and backlash more than acceptance...

people are gonna do what they want...

i\'m a vegetarian \'cause my body doesn\'t get along with meat, not because i feel that eatin\' animals is wrong...it always cracks me up when people can\'t handle the reality of killin\' and skinnin\' an animal, but they are at the drive-thru everyday gettin\' that double cheeseburger...

that\'s just a small example of the hypocrisy that is human lifestyle...i would get behind ted nugent before i could get behind PETA...

as i said, for me, it\'s more about simplicity than some save the planet bandwagon...
