Aidans Typhus WIP - Please comment

Ho all,

My name is Aidan and ive been browsing CMON for a wee while but not really had the confidence to post my own work. But my new years resolution was to paint more and to improve(!). I thought starting a WIP thread might be a good place to start posting and move along that path.

Currently on the block is a Typhus Nurgle Lord. Im trying a new way of painting (for me) which is to paint each area to completion before moving on, rather than my old way of painting all areas of the same colour at the same time.

Anyway, if i have this correctly, after this should appear the scythe and hands part of typhus. Hopefully more to come!

Welcome

Judging from this initial pic, I\'d say you\'ve got nothing to fear from posting your work here. The work on the scythe and hands seems to be of a very high standard, very worn and Nurgly (i love that word :D ). If I had to pick a weaker point (and it\'s traditional that I do ;) ) I would say the blood on the blade could use a little work, maybe darkening? But that\'s me being a bit picky I guess. Like I say, you\'re going to fit right in that that standard.

I agree with HB with the blood. It needs to be darker, nearly black, at the moment it looks like youve painted it red not like he\'s just disembowlled someone:D

have a look at some of the higher rated space marines on this site.Oh and welcome:beer:

I had a quick read through a blood tutorial (http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewtopic.php?t=23644&highlight=blood) and thought it looked very useful, so at this stage i re-painted the blade of the scythe to have a crack at that method a little later. Not happy with it at the moment, will redo again i think. I forgot how i \"rusted\" it last time, and ballsed this attempt up.

I have also spent a bit of time going back over the wrapping and wood trying to differentiate the tones as much as possible.

I have started on the right shoulder pad as well, but still have to work on differentiating between areas of the \"green\" armour. I have learnt that it saves time being patient and leaving the blackline from the undercoat. Elementary it may seem to others, but a hard lesson learned on my part!

Still learning the art of miniature photography as well, and am pleased i worked out how to change the white balance settings manually. I appreciate the tip on the blue/white gradient background, i\'ll print one when im back at work, and hopefully that will help improve things further.

Off on a conference for a week, but i\'ll be getting stuck in as soon as i get back.

Again so far so good- you have really nailed those metallics! Great definition on the trio of skulls on his shoulder pad too, thats something I struggle with personally. The armour is nice and Nurgley as well.

Righto, back from my trip and ive had a little time to paint. Worked a little on the front of Typhus.

Im disappointed with the main armour colour on the chest/stomach area, firstly because the colouration is different to that of the shoulder pad, but mainly because the streaking effect is far too abrubt. I\'ll need to focus on blending these in more and evening the tones out.

Im happier with the colour of the blood/ichor, working with inks as per the tutorial has helped here. Still need to wrk on getting more definition. I also struggle with getting placement, but i think that is just practice.

Also not sure about the red power cables. I was hoping to make the blood kind of a focal point, but this is diluted by having the cables the colour they are. But i drew a blank when trying to come up with a colour for them so suggestions welcome.

Also unsure of colours for the nurgling, i might leave him for now and see what strikes me later.

A bit more progress:

Reasonably happy with progress so far, certainly finding myself more patient than i would have thought. This has extended to repainting things if i am not happy with them. Still I think i will have another go at the panels on the lower right leg as these keep letting me down.

Let me know your thoughts if you feel like it :)

Youre really trying to do to much at one time. I would personally finish off the armour and then add the extras; such as the blood splatters and nurgling?!

hope that this helps! :)

I was trying something new for me which was to paint each area to completion before moving onto the next area. I started to deviate from this a little by starting things i felt like.

I\'ll have to try and remember to be more focused as i paint! Thanks.

He\'s getting there, but i still have lots to do. Metal studs, gore and more rust are still to be done, and I need to keep working on that nurgling to lighten up the edges a bit more. The scythe blade will also be repainted AGAIN, just cant get it so Im happy with it.

The base is giving me problems over colour. It is mostly a slimy texture with spikes, tentacles arms and a skull sitting in it. Im not sure how to paint it without it overpowering the model. Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

The model is looking great so far. His armour looks very dirty and almost putrid.

How are you planning to go with the base?

Im not sure how the base is going to go yet!!

Angora over at OzPainters said:
\"Personally I\'d make the base a kind of muted purple in overall tone. Keep the tonal range similar to the main model, using greens and greys to shade it and it should look nice.\"

I kinda like what i understand of that idea. :) Im thinking a purpley-brown with green tones from juices. I\'ll have to experiment and see what looks good.

Any other ideas??

good idear to make the base\'s colors contrasting but dont make them to bright. keep it in balance with the minis brightness. Maybe use gloss varnish to moist and slime the ground and let it creep a bit up his legs

Well, i guess this guy is no longer WIP, but i thought id post him here for completion. While i can spot plenty of things i could do better, just lost the motivation to paint him anymore. Looking forward to the next project and trying to remember the lessons learned on this one!

Thanks to all the people that provided comments and advice, it truly is much appreciated!
