Airbrush Confusion

Hi Guys,

As you may have guessed from the title I am a little confused by the amount of Airbrushes out there and I am hoping that you can shed some light on the subject.

I have been looking at these airbrushes - http://www.sylmasta.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Aztec_Airbrushes_17.html

I live in the UK, so I dealer based there would be beneficial and I intend to use it for acrylic paint, mainly the GW line but also Foundry.

Anyone offer some help?

Thats brilliant, should have really thought of the search tool and I should have also been a bit more specific as I have just found.

I am looking at just doing vehicles, I can paint the minis with a brush.

From reading that mass of info, that Einion posted (thank you for that, by the way), I can see people seem to be saying that although the Aztec brushes are easy to clean/change they are not that great for doing anything were you have to vary a nozzel.

I will be starting off by painting Space Marine Vehicles, so clean flat lines. This doesnt seem like a problem for this airbrush.

Has anyone used an Aztec and can you recommend one at all?

??? Do you mean vary the spray pattern? You can change nozzles in an Aztek in the time it took to read this sentence, so that's not a problem :snicker:

Yep. But even a suction-feed spraygun is probably adequate for that.

In terms of the spray quality (the atomisation) they're all essentially the same since they use common nozzles and that's the business end.

What you get with the different models is slightly different ergonomics and features. The best set to get is arguably the 4709 as although it's the most expensive it's also the best value. The nozzles it comes with are:
Fine Line Nozzle / .30 mm
General Detail Nozzle / .53 mm
Acrylic General Detail Nozzle / .40 mm
Acrylic High Flow Nozzle / .50 mm
General Detail Nozzle / .40 mm
High Flow Nozzle / .50 mm

I think Aztec is the way to go as it will allow me to properly plug some nozzels and then, after buying some more, not do it again. lol

Do you know if there are any difference between the metal ones and the plastic ones, apart from if you drop them on your foot one will hurt more than the other?

Also the Website I am looking at does an even more complete set ( http://www.sylmasta.com/acatalog/Aztek_A480_Metal_Airbrush_Sets.html ) but I find myself asking, do I really need all that as I have never airbrushed before?

I have just thought, are Games Workshop paints even suitable for spraying as I have theamed my army round a certain colour (Regal Blue).

LOL Other than weight, not really.

That's a judgement call. The largest 4709 set (with six nozzles) is definitely better value than the next set down. I think a large set is definitely a good idea unless you think you might not care for airbrushing at all and never do it past the first few pieces; this is possible, but unlikely. Expense could be a good motivator not to let it sit on a shelf collecting dust!

Basically any kind of hobby acrylics can be sprayed, long as they're thinned enough or the pressure is set correctly (assuming no lumps of course). The right nozzle helps too, and here's where having a number to try out right at the start might be a help too.
