Ah, the fond memories... not a first date movie, incidentally Still, gross and demented as it may be, still inspired work. Just don\'t watch the sequels...

Akira\'s plot isn\'t mayby thrilling...but the fact that makes this film special is that it was animated by hands without computers. I know Disney movies where made by hands also... but You can\'t comapare both animations. In some places Akira\'s backgrounds, and animations are almost inhuman...

I\'m wandering why You didn\'t mentioned Ghost in the Shell? IMO one of the best movies ever

I\'ve seen the original uncut Japanese version, it\'s even more disturbing than the UK/US release. Entertaining though

Akira\'s not an easy introduction to Anime, far better Appleseed and Appleseed: Deus Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell et al..

However I can give you a NEGATIVE recomendation: KAI DOH MARU
It was recommended to me and trusting fool I was, I paid £12: for 45 minutes of Missing story and p*ss poor end. AVOID.

I have a boxed set with all of the movies... you are right, all the sequels are terrible.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my all time favourite anime series.

High quality animation, entertaining left-of-center storyline, and the entire cast is likeable. YMMV on the lead character -- some folks adore her, but some think she\'s a complete jerkass. I think she\'s awesome myself.

I also recommend watching it in broadcast order for the proper pacing of the climax.

This may sound a little flippant, Japan.

My mates band toured Japan and he came back with a copy. Plus some really odd stuff that we don\'t know the name of (guess what, it was in Japanese). None of us speak or read Japanese.

I liked Akira, and thought I understood it, but this synopsis helped a ton, I must go rent it again.

Ghost in a Shell however is my all time favorite of the genre.

And someone must mention HELLSING. Although I\'m not entirely sure it fits within the genre, and it was a series not a movie.. But way worth the view, i\'d recommend it to anyone interested in anime.

I\'m very much in to the lighter hearted anime rather than the violent stuff (and really not into the sexual stuff that often gets included in some of the anime\'s.

I am currently watching (again) -

Love Hina
Fruits basket
Azumanga Daioh
Hell Girl (no not light hearted, but very interesting)

Also love alot of the Ghibli stuff, especially My neighbours the Yamadas

What I\'ve never understood about being a moderator is how when someone posts an opinion contrary to your own, you don\'t eithe rlock the thread down immediately or edit the thread to make it agree with your own views? I mean, isn\'t that the whole point of being a mod?

Seems like a mods job is to listen to people\'s complaints about comments people have posted, among other things. I have alot of respect for the mods and how patient they can be. :beer:

Yes but for everyone with the totally moving background, you have three with \"I can not move and all dialogue has to be internal to save on animation\". Also most of the Japanese animation industry is based on Disney. I think that it is more of a moral and moray thing.

As for good amine the series \"Gunslinger Girl\". Killer cyborgs, but more character development then just running around and killing folks. Well there is some of that.. And the background art, tops.

My first foray into Anime was Akira. Without anyone to explain anything to me, I hated it. About a year ago, though, a buddy started having me watch some other stuff that I could get into, and where I could learn the \"tricks\" that animes use to tell their stories.

He started me off with Record of Lodoss War, which I absolutely love. He also had me watch .Hack//Sign, which I did in three days when I was sick. The nice part with these was that I had an \'in,\' because I love D&D and video games, so the anime conventions made more sense.

Now that you folks bring it up, I think I want to go back and check out Akira again. I know its kinda far out there, but I think I might be able to appreciate it now.
