Alexander Holméns WIP thread

Hi guys,

this is my latest finished figure. It was supposed to be my entry for Paris GD but since I can´t make it I have decided to post it for the internet. It is Celeborn from the LOTR movies. I wanted to make a very cold scene and the concentration was on creating a lot of volume as well as representing the different materials in an interesting way. He took me quite a while to finish but I am very proud of the result. Please remember that it is a true 28mm figure not 32-35mm that most gaming miniatures are, so he is very small :)

Before leaving him for my next figure I wanted to ask you guys for comments and critique. Is there something with the figure that you appreciated? Anything you think could be improved? Anything you think I need to work on especially on my next figure? It is important for me to improve with every figure since I haven´t painted that many and wish to become a painter of great quality.

After receiving your comments I will correct it after your requests and tell you before I upload it to CMON.

Thanks in advance,

I hope you like him! :D

Best wishes

It looks very good and I can see that you\'re happy with him. It seems very carefully painted so I can easily understand it must have taken you a good while! ;)

I really like the softness of the light blue under-garment and the colour shifts in the face. The base is also very well done and suits him well.

If you want me to give you criticism (and from your post I think you do... :)) I have a few points that grabbed my attention. Note, that this might seem like nitpicking, but you\'ve allready got all the bigger issues sorted... ;) First of all, I think the lines that run from the corner of the eyes under the cheeks are a little overly stark and pronounced. They should be highlighted, but I think you could do it a bit less and make them \"softer\" next time.

Secondly, I think the hair looks a little flat. It looks almost smooth in places and could use a bit more variation in depth, especially in the darker tones.

Third, and now we\'re getting into real nit-picking lol... I think the white highlights on the red sash are a bit harsh... And I think the folds in the grey robe around the arms and armpits become dark a bit abruptly making the folds look like dark stripes.

So, there\'s a bit of critique for you, but don\'t take it too harshly, as I really like what you\'ve done here! This is by far the best work I\'ve seen from you!

Cheers!

:)

Hi Anders,

on the contrary - thanks for taking your time and nitpicking that is exactly what I was looking for. You are also a painter that have given me alot of valuable tips along the way so you have the right to take some pride in it :D

- maybe you are right about the lines in the face, they are sculpted that way though and I have discussed that with several other painters who liked it, I will think it over and probably soften them up a bit

-I think you are right about the hair though, I will give it more texture (det var det du menade va? :D )

-I don´t agree regarding the armpits, I looked at my self with a beige t-shirt and the
shadows definately go that dark that fast with zenithal lightening, since I use the successive shading technique you know I don´t use 1 shade to get a tone that dark :D

-the red toga should be lightened faster than the robe since it is intended to representing a more shiny material

Thanks Anders

Best wishes

I think it looks good on the left side in the photo, but on the right side I think it\'s too bright too far down the cheek. If you make a softer transition from light to dark there I think you\'ll be OK.

Precis! :)

Well, I just go on what I see in the photo and the shadows look a bit stark and unblended to me. Maybe it looks differently in real life, I don\'t know, but I would make a little more transition towards the lighter tones. Not much, but something that makes it more apparent in the photos... but I told you I was nit-picking here... ;)

-the red toga should be lightened faster than the robe since it is intended to representing a more shiny material
Well... this is maybe a matter of taste to an extent. I would do it a bit softer, but that\'s just me! :)

Thanks Anders
You\'re most welcome!

Hi everyone,

My last WIP:

On this miniature I have made quite an effort desaturating the shadows to make an effect as correct and realistic as possible. I took my time and mixed the exact complimentary color, the use of a very desaturated/cold blue as well as a hint of grey. I have only painted the face and the chest areas so there is not much to see yet:)

I have redone the face slightly, desaturating the shadows a bit and have painted her brown dress.

Hello everyone,

my space girl is finished. I painted the girl rather clean to make her stand out from the surroundings, to make it obvious that she is not in her normal habitat.

I hope you like her!

Please tell me what you think!

Fantastic work! I really like how the purple adds just a touch of color.

How did you paint the sword? Next to the face this is my favorite part.

GunjiNoKanrei: to paint truly realistic metals you have to think about reflection and direction of light. I used TMP (true metallic paint GW) but the technique is the same as NMM. I started with a dark metal (Boltgun Metal GW) and shaded with extremely thin washes of black. After that I blended the dark metal up to a very bright one (Mithril silver GW) and finished the areas by giving the reflection point a touch of Enamel 11 by Humbrol diluted with vodka (I was out of white spirit).

I also tinted the metals medium tones with an orange/brown to give it a more realistic look.

I hope I was clear enough in my explanation!
