Alric, King of the Dwarves

Well he is no GD entry, but he is finally off of my workbench after a year! He has frustrated me to no ends, even causing me to lose interest in painting over long periods of time! Some aspects of this sculpt are not very good at all, liek the lack of real facial details because of the helms they all wear. Of course, my lighting doesn\'t help with what details there are in the pics LOL!

He is done now, all in shiny metallics, and I can move on to new, amazing things!!!

Good earthy dwarf like tones!

I like the rich feel much of your work has.

Do you use inks? Or how do you achieve that depth of color that seems to be there?

Supervike - I like to use inks of various thin-ness (is that a word? LOL) and use washes for shading the metallics. I will tend to base color them, then ink and shade, then slowly build up to the base color again by mixing the inks with my base color... Highlights are just lighter colors, like Mithril silver for example.

The other colors, like the reds, are simply layered up over black primer. I do like highlighting red by adding light fleshtone. It keeps the red from looking either like pink or orange. I think the pics are still missing a bit of the contrast but then in hindsight, I probably could have taken the highlights up another level as well.

I really like the earthy feel to this piece. No stark colours to jolt the eyes - it all goes together very well. All in all very nicely done

Thanks all! I wanted to keep them dwarvish, thus the metals. The skintones are nice except I do not like the helmets covering the faces the way they do. I always find a face is what brings the miniature to life; without it, it is like a cylon or a stormtrooper, or a black knight at a bridge...

Tooshy - Thanks! I had a comment elsewhere that the book was too red and jarring, but then it *is* a magical book and probably bound in some form of magical velvet material

I would have liked to add some more details, such as trims on their gloves, and more on the book, but frankly, after a year of workign on this piecemeal, it is done
