New Changes?

Ryan Dancey (of WotC fame/shame) has made his annual predictions for the rpg/hobby industry in general, and his remarks on GW were very interesting.

The full blog is here:

Before the end of 2007, Games Workshop will announce it is either being bought, is going private, or is merging with some other entertainment venture to form a new entity. On November 27th, Games Workshop was notified that Fidelity International had liquidated its position in Games Workshop\'s stock, selling approximately 2.4 million shares, or 7.83% of the company. On or about that date, 6 million shares, or more than a third of the company, changed hands. As of yet, we are unclear who bought and sold those equities, but we believe that the action, which has no similarity to any recent move in Games Workshop\'s stock, heralds a major change at the company. On January 5th, Games Workshop made a profit warning announcement, indicating that sales in the run up to Christmas had not met expectations, and that the company was revising its earnings estimates downward. Managements failures to address their sliding business model, and increasing pressure from large investors will force major changes at GW by year\'s end.

Talk amongst yourselves.

I have no idea who this dude is.

An expert on markets, shares and whatnot surely to make such a bold prediction with such conviction right? Or just some fella who can\'t let go of once being important and now feels he has to talk crazy shit in order to get a bit of attention again?

Yeah - saw that the other day off of the Steve Jackson Games website -

Problem is doomsayers been saying pretty much the same thing about the industry for 10 years. Oh well - everyone to the freak bar - virtual beers on me.

Do we ever actually stop drinking?
I\'ve stopped looking for GW threads.
If I log on to the forums, I make sure I\'ve got a few shots handy.

Saves time.

Well to be fair that is only part of the essay which in itself is only a single entry to an ongoing blog the guy has. I don\'t think he claims to have god like knowledge, just a long time in the industry and some opinions of possible events which may shape it.
Overall his outlook is that the industry will probably have a shake up but not that there will be a collapse or anything.

As to the GW bit quoted; while it is not 100% that they will have a year as described it is a reasonable train of thought considering it is a publicly listed company. For a third of the company to bought be a single entity is certainly suggestive of a possible take over attempt.

That is what I was thinking. It was a person\'s opinion. Not a GW bash. I thought others would be interested since there are role-players, gamers, Collectible Card Gamers and the like here as well.

To focus on just GW is missing the whole point. Our hobby as a whole is going through the shredder. Gaming stores are going away. I don\'t know about you, but I have a lot of fond memories of hanging out at hte gaming store on Saturdays.

I think he is onto something. I remember (and some of the other \'older\' guys should too) going to a COn and they would have at least 11 tables dedicated to the AD&D tournement. Then in teh 90s it was replaced by Magic the Gathering and other card games.

I think the guy is saying that RPGs are becoming extinct. A lot of the games we a familiar with are. they will have to come up with something new. I honestly don\'t see the RPG ranks being replenished with young people. Not with Everquest, World of Warcraft, and MMORPGs out there.

i dont exactly agree with you on that. in being a teacher i noticed that in the last few years students begun getting back into roleplaying games. especially d&d. the clix systems are still selling quite well, but i do agree that they need to think of a new way to market to a new generation. much like how games like yugioh and magic now have online card games, the same could happen to roleplaying and we could see a major change in the futuere. hopefully though the old brick and mortar establisments can keep up with the change since i still love going to my old hobby store.:D

Oh lord!! Please! No!!! THen we\'d be plagued with numerous \"I Told You So\" threads to replace all the GW bashing threads. Followed closely by a string of nostalgic threads about how wonderful life was back when GW was around. :(

So very true. If there are two things people like to talk about it\'s how much things suck now and how great they were right up until the present. Ask again in a year and you will get precisely the same answers.

Yeah. And griping about people griping is a new thing.

Actually, it would be a great lesson if GW did crash and burn. If they keep getting away all of these shinanigans, the other guys will do the same.

But this isn\'t about GW. Its about the hobby as a whole. This is something that we all enjoy.
