Am I so disillusioned?

Well, it definately sounds like I need some photo help. So, if you all don\'t mind, I\'ll take some tonight---tweak it to the best of my ability---and hit you up again for a look/opinion....
We\'ll see how it goes.

I have to say that I would score this a 7.
Its easy to see from your other work that you are way above a 7 painter, but there is just too much \"wrong\" with this one to make it an 8.
Mainly its the photo as mentioned.I too am having a right job on getting images right only to see them posted and look awfull.I have even dropped a couple and re posted them with better pics.If the image was sharp and edited like DR has done then it would be an 8 no probs.
To go even higher there are a few suggestions I would make on the basis of this mini.
1.The skin tone is too subtle, while nicely blended and a good colour I think an over emphasized look would be better, especially on a mini of this nature.
2.Darklining around the facial hair to make it stand out more as it is close to the skintone.
3.While the filigree is excellent ,the gold on the sword hilt needs some pure white highlights to make it \"shine\".
4.The sword blade is crying out for extra highlights,to me it looks quite flat.
5.Little details like the arrow feathers, paint rubbed off on the base edge. These I think are as important than anything cos when you are near the top people will look for anything to knock a point off.
The way I see it to average a 9 here most people will have to vote 9 or 10 to account for the ones who dont like the sculpt/nurgle you name it.Oh not to mention the (whisper) snipers.
To sum it up,
Clean up the photo and youve got an 8,which aint bad going at all.
Address the other things to go higher, which you are certainly capeable of.

How many months!!

You did say you have only been painting 12-13 months???

Well, if you were a horse, I\'d back you and if you were a company..I\'d buy shares.

I have looked through your gallery, and although I haven\'t voted on them all, the lowest score you have received from me is an 8.

With regards to Hogarth...I agree with everything that has been said here, with the possible exception of Zaphod, but I also think that this is a bad sculpt to begin with.

I know that, in a lot of folks eye\'s, Rackham do\'t do any bad sculpts but I collect Kelt Sessairs and even I find nothng to love in this particular figure. So, to get as high a score as you have is a real achievement.

You are currently at 7.8 The highest scoring Hogarth on the site is this one, which stands at 8.0.

It also has 279 votes...;)

Hehe...thanks Finn.
And yes...I actually painted about two figures with testor\'s enamel in about 1986---a bad job, to say the least. I picked up my \"third\" figure in November of 2003....I\'ve painted about 150-200 figures since then.
Someday, if you\'re interested, I\'ll give you the whole story. You know, a good conversation, as opposed to me just bitchin\' at ya. :D

150 to 200 minis since Nov 2003!!!:wow:
Are you a robot?lol Do you sleep? ???
I\'ve painted around 10 and have another 10 at various stages of completion since then. I can see how you became so good in that short time.

I do have problems in the sleep arena...which helps with the paintin\' time, considering I make my living elsewhere.

Yea..it\'s alot of figures. The major improvements came with the ones I spent the most time on--taking\' greater care and focused learning and such.
I can\'t take all the credit, though. I\'ve had alot of help from several folks in the painting community---givin\' me some good, thorough, focused feed back, and providing a little nudge when I reach a plateau.
It\'s been an interesting journey...to say the least. I\'m definately lookin\' forward to the next years\' pending accomplishments.

Humm seems to me you\'re in the top 150 of CMON not bad, most people (like me ) would be more then happy to be in the top 500 :p As to this mini I would rate it a seven due to mainly the same reasons mentioned earlier. But you have some great work in your gallery :D

I was curious, according to my assumptions based on what I read about this mini over at the Reaper forums recently, I thought you had done this piece in 3.5 hours? Anything I\'ve ever done that scored above an 8 has taken me over 10 hours to complete except my most recent fig which took 6. She\'s only above an 8 because she\'s a brand new sculpt I\'m sure. :)

What I\'m saying is, for 3.5 hours of work don\'t be so down in the dumps. You should be able to make a LIVING doing that level in that amount of time.

I\'m not saying it deserves more than it\'s getting though. I think that for the level of work put into this piece and the amount of time taken, a 7.8 is decent.

Okay, ready set ...snipe me! Everytime I post something on these boards I lose a place in the standings! lol.

I\'ve been into minis and modelling for a long time now, over 30 years, and I am always interested in how people get \'re-infected\';).

Seems to be a hobby that a lot of people just can\'t shake off..

Sorry guy, after rechecking those threads, I had you confused with another painter.

Oy, so many posts, so little time! :~(
I get \'em mixed up sometimes.
By the way, how long DID you spend on him?

sorry but i actually gave it a 7 already.

and i stand by it. there are two things that i see keeping it back.
the photo, which has been discussed.

the pallette. it\'s pretty good mostly. nice rackham feel. but there are two primary colors screaming \"look at me\", not good.

when your after score higher than 8 everything becomes much more important. color chioce is paramount. the viewer has to go \"sweet\" and have no second guesses before they vote. i believe the bright red and blue are the cause of the lower scores.

also when you paint a mini using a familar palette you will get lower votes, it\'s a case of seen it, voted for it.

anyway. thats what i think.
