Am I undercharging?

What do people think I should be charging for this sort of paintjob?

This is something I have just painted for someone. It took me around a week to do, part time of course, not too sure how many hours I put into it, as I tend to price the job, then paint it to that price. I dont like charging or paying for per hour for work, as I tend to think certain people would drag out the job. After I have a few opinions on price I will post up how much I charged. Thanks.

It\'s impossible to say really....

The figures are obviously gaming figures, due to the basing, and not display pieces. However, they are painted to a high standard and with different basing would be display minis.

I think the more \'collectible\'your work is, the larger your \'fanbase\' and how prolific you are as a good quality seller the more you\'ll get away with charging.

If I was to guess at these... £30.00 - £40.00 for each figure and about £10.00 for the weapon. So £70.00 - £90.00. I\'d be surprised if it was less as I can\'t see how it would be worth your time.

*edit - actually the figure on the right would probably be £10.00 less than the one on the left.

** edit2 - Just wanted to point out that that is the LEAST I would expect to pay.

My question would be did you have to buy the set or did the customer supply the pieces to be painted? And are you doing the whole box set or just the three pieces here?


For these I\'d say BB has set the pricing about right.

the rule I was taught when figuring pricing is roughly figure the time you spent on it and then multiply that by ten. So if you spent 9 hours on them then . . .

9 x 10= 90

He supplied the minis. I only been charging £30 for the 3 minis, plus a small pile of cannon balls that are on th eother side of the weapons base.

I only charged £20 for these ones as I am doing them for a mate, and he wanted to pay.

I don\'t normaly do commission work, but would consider it, if I could get around £90 plus for my work.

Well... £30.00 is grossly undervalued I think. However \'mate-rate\' is probably a different situation lol

These are really nicely painted imo and easily worth the higher rate

for an americans wages i fully agree mate.
but dollars don\'t go that far in the uk or the rest of europe

$200 is pretty fair tho for high quality gaming pieces.

True true..we are getting hosed.. thats ok our recession will be on your door step soon and then you to can feel our pain but I agree hes charging way to little for his work. I can understand giving a friend a deal, but getting bent over with out the benifit of a reach around is another thing

That\'s some nice work - the NMM, the guy\'s torso muscles. Clearly the good-friend-price was a real bargain... good paint jobs will never be cheap!

be careful too about giving mates deals. If one gets a deal and then another finds out about it then they will want it and it will be a chain effect. I will give my gaming group a deal and that is who ever I\'m gaming with at the time. Once I\'m no longer in the group, if you want a piece done it will be full charge for it. That way people don\'t expect you to cut deals all the time.

totaly agree on the economy part, the uk (and most of mainland europe) has been living in a false economy for quite some time (i personaly hope the pound crashes after i have paid sculpters tho!)

I churn out table-top mini\'s like butter, and they\'re easy and I enjoy it.
I agree that for me to do pieces THAT nice I\'d charge more than normal, but closer to the $40-60 range. You guys that charge SO much must have a HUGE name for yerself, and charge more for your name than for the work itself. More power to you. Maybe I am approaching it the wrong way. I enjoy painting, I enjoy gaming, and I remember how hard I struggled when I first started both.
I used to laugh at the guys locally that charged $30 for a single fig. They did 3 or 4 a year. Meanwhile I did a few hundred at $6-10 and I enjoyed it. No attitude, no whining, and complaining. I\'m not saying you are like the chumps at the gaming store where I grew up, just that that was their attitude, and it chaffes.
I charge for time and supplies, I enjoy painting too much to charge more.
If I charged more, I\'d end up painting less.

as I mentioned on the other thread I\'d charge roughly $125 for the paint job of these miniatures. Then I\'d tack on the expense of the miniatures (if I paid for them) and then a little more for shipping costs.
