American revolution

Hi guys,
I\'m gathering information for my research paper on the American Revolution and I thought that here would be a good place to get some data. My question is: Do you think the American Revolution should have happened? I know this will be an extremely controversial topic so I will not offer my opinion so that no one gets mad at me. :D I just thought that this would be a good place to get some data. Thank you if you vote. (Please vote according to your location. And again thank you if you help. Please don\'t get mad at me!)

To be honest with you, i dont really think many British people understand why the American civil war really happened (well, i do, but i\'m not \"most\" people ), and it happened a fair few years ago (non of us were born, cept\' Mike lol). So i guess my answer is yes, from my limited understanding of what happened, it should have happened.

With knocks on Mike\'s age aside....

I think he is talking about the American Revolutionary War, NOT the American Civil war, which was fought some 90 years later.

I think the ARW was inevitable as it gave modern America a kick start. The ADW which occurred later was however a tragedy that should never have happened.

I paint my thumb.
Us canadians never needed a revolution, and besides having the queens face on our coins.. were doing fine.
However, things were quite different down there and america really needed itès autonomy to become what it became and accomplish what it accomplished. Too bad there had to be a war for it tough.
Sure thing is, the world would surely be a different place if it never did happen.

As a patriotic Brit I\'d brand all the revolutionaries as treasonous scoundrels who were fit for nothing but dancing the hemp jig.

On the other hand, if pushed, I\'d grudgingly admit that the British administration did a fairly good job of screwing the colonists over so it\'s probably their own stupid fault.

The hemp jig.... nice one!

I agree with UnDave that England generally sucks (that is what he said, right?).

Here in the great white north we\'ve been able to co-exist with our English brothers/masters fairly well with few hiccups and no matter how ridiculous we find the concept of a monarchy it\'s been going well for some time now.

The American Revolution needed to happen. It seemed to me it was one of those famous dick measuring contests that just had to explode into a full scale conflict. With everything going on at the time in the colonies it was clear that England was not going to recognise the distinct and independant nature of the society that had grown from it\'s meager beginings.

I\'m all for it. The States got to kick some English backside and get military support, advice, and training from the French which I have been able to slide into every conversation I have with one of my American friends as they go on about the unstoppable American military machine.

He he.... hemp jig... heheee.

As a Marine, and one of the few remaining intelligent AND patriotic Americans left (we seem to be becoming an extinct species due to the breeding program of the unwashed masses) I would definitely say it had to happen. The policies and rivalries were coming to a head, and without the resources to devote to quelling the rampant independence it became inevitable. Our forefathers were an underhanded and high-minded lot.
With a nod to that era\'s thinking, we need another one.
The same problems with the regime are being expressed in a \"new\" way today, and the general American public is unaware of what is being taken from them in the form of liberties and false security.
But that can wait for another topic...LOL.

it\'s the same in most countries mate.
people being put into debt to save the rich, that\'s why the americans had enough with unreasonable taxes and not being given the right to use their own currency.

Hey! I said the British government sucked THEN. Full of idiots trying to line their pockets while watching the rest of us go to shit... actually no you\'re right not much has changed there has it.

If you want to look at it another way it could have been a good thing for the UK in the long run. Back then the American colonies were pretty tiny compared to what they are today, a handfull of cities clinging to the east coast with very little in between. If we\'d held on to it through the expansion west there\'s no way such a large area could have been governed properly from England. There\'s a very real chance that the capital would have been moved to somewhere on the North American continent safely away from the other bickering European powers, leaving the British Isles as a back water province in a much larger \"British Empire\". For the sake of that I\'m rather glad that King George \"allowed them to go their own way\"

I\'m gonna say it NEEDN\'T have happened, BUT, it probably would have eventually due to the king being barmy (If you count Syphilitic senility or whatever it was), and the parliament at the time caring more about fighting Napoleon than matters elsewhere.

I also have limited knowledge being British, but I\'d imagine even if it DIDN\'T happen, America would still be independent now, much like the rest of the commonwealth countries.
