An older submission; how can I raise my score?

There are a few things about him that bother me... I'll do them better next time, but I wanted to hear other peoples' opinions on what it is that takes this guy down to a 7.1 with a 6.8 registered avg.

Thanks :)

Howdy Beamo.

I think first of all, the photo is a smidge washed out and out of focus.

The staff looks a bit rougher than the rest.

However, I think that shoulder design is killer, and I love the weathering. I gave it an 8, so what the hell do I know....

I noticed that 'higher contrast' minis do seem to score a bit better. But, I like you're realistic style.

hi beamo.
hair and skin need work, your paint seems too thick, there is a lack of hilighting, the mini has no a focal point (should be the face), and the photos aren't great.
personally, i dont like the mini.
still, its a very solid, highly detailed paint job. better than i could do on a SM. nice work.

agree with the guys. i think some more extreme highlighting on the edges of the armour would help it pop more. lovely freehand

What stands out for me is the seeming over-reliance on black primer as the shadow.
There are a number of places which seem to show nothing but primer, eye the wolf skull eye sockets the backpack top holes/vents, around the waist line and the brass/gold emblem. Has these all been reduced to a tone of the overall wolves colour it would have "lightened" the mini.
Increase the tonal range of the face and give a shadow definition to the hair edge and you'll se a difference there as well.
As others have pointed out whie the freehand on the shoulder pad is there and very good there is nothing else which shouts Space Wolf Rune Priest, so Free hand runes and Dangly Doodahs on the figure wil help it have a bit more bite. (Pun Intended)

Thanks for the replies. the tough crit is what I was looking for.

While there is practically no black primer showing, aside from the recess in the vent holes that I never noticed (but they sure stand out to me now that you mention it), I can certainly see how that would appear to be the case. I took those shades pretty dark, and with the natural shadows that I couldn't seem to kick during photography, it does look like I slacked off and relied on primer, even to me.

Hair has never been my strong point, but I continue to practice... maybe that's part of why I started playing Space Wolves. :D

Good point about the lack of "stuff" indicating what he is. I didn't even notice until long after I'd finished him, that I even neglected to make him a psychic hood.

I think it does look washed out in the photos, and made him appear less highlighted. I'll try to compensate for that in photos in the future, though.

I like the armor weathering, but where it is just black it looks like the mini is chipped, not the paint on the armor.

Sometimes it gives a better appearance to have chips or scratches two toned, one edge with a lighter color than the surrounding armor, the opposite edge in black. the non-black edge can even be darker than the mid tone for the armor, it just needs to be picked out as different from both the armor and the black. Keep the "chipped highlights" in the same light reference to each other and the model and youll notice a huge difference in depth.
