What kind of material was used to make the stone work on the following minis? what gives the surface of the stonework that one way wirebrushed look? Were the main stone separation lines carved before the surface texture scrape? ???

ask the artist, but I can guess at a couple of ways.

Pink or blue foam (styrofoam)

Sculpy (oven cured polymer clay)

my guess is quick air drying plaster, one of the Cry Havocs has an article using this where details are scribed into the cured plaster. I\'ve tried it and it works very well

with thought, you can make simple moulds from plastic card to create structural shapes

actually, I first saw the method by Marijn Van Gils, 3 times best of show winner at EuroMilitaire (they guy is a genius). He did an article in AFV Modeller magazine. You can actually buy a pdf file of the article for £1. It is honestly worth every penny

THE article in question

definitely not blue / pink high density foam. i\'ve used that stuff before.

thanks Orb.

downloaded and read it. it has some nice tips, but i\'m still baffled at the small scale of the emissary of darkness\' base.

i\'ve used paris plaster / plaster of paris before, but the main lines i carve are just not as clean as anakron\'s. plus those acute angles (emissary) where the 3 sides meet are just so clean, i would have broken big chunks off those edges.

i\'ve read all the concerning CH articles too.

i guess its just practice, and trying different consistencies of the plaster.

The stone work is made with \"Fimo\" paste

1- make The shape you want in the paste
2- put the paste at the furnace to harden (130°C - 20 min)
3 - Draw your separation lines carved with nail, cutter or other
4 - surface texture withe sandpaper or metal brush (you can surface texture before drawing lines)

That\'s all :D

Sorry for my poor english :~(

James, many art stores in the UK stock fimo or sculpey 3 (which is very similar). If you have a Hobbycraft superstore near you, check out in there.

thats the sculpey 3 I\'ve got; the site also does fimo I notice. But that\'s what I understand Fimo to be

so if i get the white colour one and make the shape of the wall then bake in oven and then shape with a sharpe object and use sand paper to create wall texture

hey thanks for the tips.
your English is fine.
Would the Fimo be too hard to carve lines after it is baked?

the onirik video tutorial shows the lines being carved in first. i will give it a try :)

no, it\'s better for a precise result ;)

The onirik tutorial is made for \"plates titles\"

Try all methods and get the better for the result you want ;)

i\'ve done similar

My engine of the gods has good stonework (IMHO). I did it with apoxysculpt. Given shape, and sanded when hard, and finally carved with an exactly knife. It doesn\'t look it, but it is quite smooth and nicely finished IMHO (the curved part around the sphere).

See my gallery.
