I am very singleminded on this subject.
I hate smoke, but tolerate smokers as long as they don\'t blow the smoke right into my face.
I hate it\'s stench, that lingers through your clothes and even the next morning in my hair.
I hate the way it hurts my eyes.
But i tolerate the people that smoke, because it is their choice to inhale that stench. As long as they tolerate me for not smoking, and don\'t blow the smoke at me or near me. Some smokers are ignorant about the fact what it does to people who have never smoked in their live (like kat said)

I drink, but I would never drink and drive. I also don\'t do drugs or habitually leave litter lying around the place. I totally agree with peoples\' sentiments that these habits along with smoking are antisocial and potentially dangerous in the case of drink/drugs and driving. However, I don\'t see the reasoning behind justifying smoking by saying that other people drink and drive, or take drugs or commit crimes to fund their drugs habit.

I agree with you entirely - two wrongs do not make a right - how can some thing that is unpleasant for the majority of people be justified as a right for others if it impacts on the majority- as I said before I couldn\'t care less what all you smokers do to your own bodies (as long as I don\'t have to pick up the tab through my taxes) but I don\'t want to have you inflict the effects of your dependency on me.

Both my parents were 40 a day for most of their lives and my father died of displaced lung cancer. When I was growing up I thought that brown was the colour for ceilings - I didn\'t realise they could actually be white. Naturally I started smoking when I was quite young (about 11) and did so until the place I worked in banned smoking this assisted me in reducing and finally stopping - so I don\'t agree with the moans made about work and public area bans:p

Instead of justifying a nasty, unhealthy habit why not see it for what it is - addiction - and get some help to get your life back!

More power to Evil Dave and his patches!

Once again the point is missed....

First off there are far more \"Dickheads\" ,as Dragonsreach put it , that are non-smokers than there are smokers...statistics... far more non smokers therefore far more \"dickheads\"

See this is what makes us all stupid WE the addicted smoke...you the non-smokers know we are addicted, know what can happen to you if you stay around our smoke...but are so stupidly hardheaded you will try your damnedest to take away our right to smoke rather than just leave the area.

You will deal with it when it\'s in a bar even though you know it\'s killing you, but hey so what I\'m having fun at the moment. And then you will bitch about the smoke when you get home.

Yeah so some smokers throw out their butts, some McDonalds customers throw out their coffee cups, some men piss on toilet seats but to say they all do is Stereotyping and is just as small minded and petty as insisting that i quit my habit because YOU don\'t like it.

As I have stated before...I myself am quitting because I want to and for years have simply held out because of spite.
You non-smokers have NOidea of how insidious an addiction this is...for all you coffee drinkers out there here\'s a clue I would reach for my cigs before i even thought of my coffee...Right now I have been on the Nicorette patch for 2 weeks and still have the headaches from lack of nicotine.
But all you non-smokers know is ...it stinks...it makes my eyes burn...whine, whine....yadda yadda

Basically what i guess i am trying to say is Hate smoking if you want...be militant about it...But stay out of my face.

You insult my intellegence and your own when you ask me stupid questions like \"You know you can get lung cancer from that?\"
\"DUH\"

They are after the smoker\'s now then who...Darthfoley thinks the fat people...and then?

When everyone is perfect and just like everyone else will you rest easy at night?

Also... and fortunately, we do have a freedom of choice in most things... including smoking and all that goes with it. You have the choice whether to smoke or not and by the same token, you have the choice to complain about it. However, if you are in a bar or somewhere that smoking occurs, then non-smokers have a choice whether or not to enter.

Dude, take a chill pill or something. I don\'t think one of us ever said they\'d agreed with people saying stupid things like you mentioned in your first post. Most of us are the \"live and let live\" type anyways. All I was trying to do was point out that there are plenty of inconsiderate smokers out there, and they are the ones that cause the inconsiderate non-smokers. As for laws saying you can\'t smoke in certain areas, well, I don\'t really agree with them anyways, I think it should be the owners choice, though I have to admit I rather like being able to go to a bar and not smell like crap when I get home... :D
As for feeling that smokers are stupid, I have plenty of relatives that smoke, and I wish they would quit, but I don\'t think they\'re \"stupid\" for not being able to quit. Hell, I am probably at least as addicted to caffeine as they are to smoking, and I can\'t quit drinking coffee or soda, believe me, I\'ve tried
I don\'t like being in a crowded room with smokers, but with all the laws passed nowadays, I don\'t have to be. So I am fine with that. I just don\'t like it when people break those laws because its too much of a pain to go outside. Personally I think they should make it easier for people not to be tempted to break the rules (my favorite is the new trend to make rules that people can\'t smoke within X hundred feet of the building - a little overboard, plus where are they supposed to put their butts if their isn\'t a designated smoking area?).
At any rate, there\'s plenty of dickheads out there smokers and non-smokers, drinkers and non-drinkers, mini-painters and non-mini-painters etc.

Unfortunately

Katie...
This is chilled...I am personally not offended by what is said here. Just curious about certain mindsets people have. When I talk about stupidity I am not singling anyone out in particular just the human race as a whole, because i\'m sure that there is not one person on the planet that has not done something incredibly stupid at one time or another...I know I have. I look back on my childhood years and marvel that I survived them.lol lol

But maybe that should be another topic \"What\'s the stupidest thing you ever did?\"lol

To Evil Dave - please check my previous post- I admire your effort to quite and hope you are successful. This is in a general humanitarian sort of way as I don\'t know you and doubt we will ever meet so your health is really of little consequence to me!

We all have to make decisions in life and take the consequences for them. If you keep on smoking you will be the one at risk (and possibly your nearest and dearest if you buy the passive smoke argument). I don\'t know, and have only a marginal interest in, your reasons for quitting but you think it sufficiently worthwhile - so good on you!

What I, and I think others, object to is the fact that as a passtime, hobby, addiction, etc smoking pollutes the immediate area and intrudes on others.

You have said don\'t go into the pub etc or leave where there is smoking but why should my enjoyments be restricted through the action of others? I would be happy if some restaurants, pubs etc were EITHER non smoking OR were clearly smoking then I could choose, as it is, even in non smoking areas the pollutants and stink drift across:|~

Also I don\'t agree with your analogy of smoking and obesity - I am 6ft 1\" and just under 17 stone - about 235 pounds and know I am overweight - I have a back problem and pains in my knees but my weight does not impact on anyone else apart from me! No one goes home moaning about having stood next to me in a pub (well at least I don\'t think they do:D)

If anyone wanted to comment on my weight I would take it as a sign of ignorance on their part and move on!:p

Evil Dave

Nomis,
As Darthfoley pointed out there are those who will point out your obesity...you have heard about the airlines wanting to charge double for overweight people?

But you have hit the nail on the head... ignorance...
the topic was supposed to be a light jab at why people feel the need to slam others for their addictions or how much they weigh or whatever...Why do non-smokers feel the need to point out we will probably die of cancer...we know this...why do skinny people feel the need to laugh or slam obese people...I know some over weight women who would literally kill to have a body like a super model...do people who comment on other peoples quirks and habits think these comments help them?

Is it insecurity?...Is it petty meaness?...is it ignorance?...or is it proof that humanity cannot accept people for who they are and let it be?

And I to agree with the EITHER ,OR restaurauant or pub idea. However I don\'t think it would work.

I think this is perfectly reasonable if someone is obese enough to prevent the airline from being able to sell the seat next to them. If someone takes up two seats, they should be charged for two seats. So far as I can tell this isn\'t discrimination, just common sense. Am I missing something?

They are after the smoker\'s now then who...Darthfoley thinks the fat people...and then?

When everyone is perfect and just like everyone else will you rest easy at night?

I myself used to smoke, but quit before trying to get pregnant, so I know how hard it is to quit. I actually still enjoyed smoking at the time, but couldn\'t even fathom the thought of continuing while pregnant, or after the child was born, since a child has no choice if the parents smoke. I think parents who smoke around their children should be charged with child endangerment, or at the very LEAST, negligence.

First, I would like to point out that it wasn\'t until AFTER I quit that I even NOTICED the awful stench. So a lot of smokers don\'t even realize how bad it is.

As for your comment on us having the choice to enter the smoke-filled pubs/bars, that is true; I just never go anywhere like that. As for being able to leave the area when someone is smoking, well, that is not always possible. I HATE having to enter or leave any store or other public place, especially with my 4 year-old daughter, because there is ALWAYS someone outside smoking. The entrances are always encompassed by a thick cloud of smoke. Some smokers may even believe that because they are outside, the smoke just blows away, but in most cases, due to air currents and eddys around building openings, mostly it just stays in the general area. I have even had people actually blow out a mouthful of smoke in my AND my 4 year-old\'s faces!:(:flame:

As for the attitude that throwing a cigarette butt on the ground is no different from throwing a McDonald\'s coffee cup down is utterly ridiculous. When my daughter was two, she and I were walking down the sidewalk, hand-in hand, and she was picking up sticks, flowers, etc. She stooped to pick up another rock, and before I could stop her, her hand moved instead to a cigarette butt and stuck the tip of it in her mouth and pretended to smoke \"like big people\" she has seen in public. How horrifying!!!

You made the comment about non-smokers staying out of your face; I would love to, and do whenever possible, but I sure would appreciate it if smokers would stay out of our faces!

I have no problem with you wanting to die.

My problem is never the adult who makes the conscious decision to ignor what he knows to be true. Cigarette = lung cancer, fat = heart disease, porno = broken penis.

My problem is the children who have to suffer for the mistakes of their parents and a society who doesn\'t believe it should be held accountable for anything.

I did a quick search of the web to find SIDS + Cigarette and I didn\'t find any hard numbers. What I did find was tens, if not hundreds, of sites that say there is an obvious connection between children who succumb to SIDS and parents who are smokers. Did the child chose to smoke? No.

On the subject of fat. If you have a child you know that anything they see on TV they want. Especially if they see an older child using/eating it. And if it happens to taste good, all the better... for the product people. Advertizing is subversive and they target the young, impressionable minds.

My daughter thinks there is nothing better in the world than going to McDonalds, eating chicken nuggets, and playing on the playground. And I have to admit, after a long day at work it is easy. It is a struggle to get her to eat AT ALL. When I have commercials beating her down with all the things \"she likes,\" it\'s hard for me to convincer to try anything new.

She has never had Cocoa Puff, but she is sure they are the best cereal around. So I think the products: fast food restaurants, fatty food makers, etc, do bear some responsibility here. They are not solely responsible, but there is a certain amount of accountability I wish people would take.

ps. Here is where I dive right off the deep end. I am not about to believe in the Illuminati, or 12 foot lizards, or anything like that, but there is just about enough crap in the world: drugs, nicotene, porn, caffine, alcohol, fat/addictive foods; to make me think that there really are people at the top. And they keep us in line, and out of the way, by distracting us with these petty, destructive things. Things that do not advance us or our families, and in most cases, set us back.

I am addicted to at least two of the things on that list. I go for a time without and then I fall, head long into a week or a month of gorgeing myself. When I come to my senses I am embarrassed and that much poorer. I have accomplished nothing creative or fruitful.

These things to which we are addicted are more than just physically destructive. If you look at how you feel about these things and think about them in terms of control, you might be surprised to find that they are in charge and not you. When I first thought about this crap as someone elses way of preventing me from my ultimate goal of happiness I was disgusted.

These things are an addiction, and make no mistake, the CEOs of McDonalds, Phillip Morris, Nabisco, etc, don\'t give one fat sh*t about your health. They care about money.

I never said there was no difference...although neither cigarette butts nor styrofaom is biodegradable...you simply misunderstood.

Dammit, Evil Dave, you have to make fun of me!

The Tooth Metrosexual is real. There I said it! He\'s real and as androgenous as the day he first kissed me!

Not that I wanted his kiss. I am as straight as a man can be here in the deep, dark south. But he looked so much like a woman. Well, not exactly like a woman, but he looked like such a pretty man, I was sure he was really just a... Well, hell\'s bells, he looked hot. He looked like Johnny Dep and I wasn\'t about to pass up a chance to kiss him!lol

Some men do, but all men have. I would like to thank the considerate ones who don\'t even aim for the seat but shoot right at the floor. My biggest annoyance is those that think smearing their dung on the seat is amusing. At my place of work several coworkers smoke. They have to smoke outside and the request was made that they smoke around the corner from the doors so that people wouldn\'t have to walk through to get inside. We no longer have complaints from smokers or non-smokers. I personally would never confront a smoker about their habit unless they are a close buddy who does want to quit. Then I would feel it is supportive to offer constructive criticizism about the plan of attack on their addiction.

Once I saw a commercial where a woman was talking about smoking too much. She\'d smoked so much, in fact, that she needed doctors to permanently drill a 2 cm wide hole in her neck so she could breathe. And then she brings a lighted cig to that hole and inhales.
Now, everytime a smoker blows smoke in my face, I imagine him with a gaping hole in the throat, and a voice to match.

Anyway, I was taught that my liberty ends where my neighbor\'s begins, meaning that I\'m free to do what I want as long as I don\'t bug other people. While I personally can deal with a few wisps of smoke once in a while, I understand the reasons why smoking is banned in an increasing number of places.

About people suing companies for their own lack of responsibility (like : I ate at McD\'s and now I\'m fat), I heard a very appropriate name for this : the teflon attitude. :D

No it is not. It is never acceptable behavior to confront a complete stranger by attacking their personal habits. You have had people behave badly towards you but don\'t assume all of us non-smokers would accept such behavior.

Normally I avoid smokers. Now personally, if I can\'t avoid your smoke (such as if we are in an elevator for example) I would say something such as \"would you mind not smoking until we are off the elevator because your smoke makes it difficult for me to breathe.\" If you persisted, I might say my asthma could flare up and cause me great pain and possible danger. (I don\'t actually have asthma but my doctor did say it was as close to asthma as it could be without actually being asthma.)

I do not like smoke. It makes me very uncomfortable. In fact I usually start coughing uncontrollably around smokers. I am not afraid of dying from cancer caused by second hand smoke, but if you think just because it won\'t kill me it\'s okay, then I guess you wouldn\'t mind me sitting next to you poking you in the eye with my finger all day long. It won\'t kill you after all.
