looking good andy, although you-know-why... 
i have to underline that it will not make your life easier to paint TMM, is neither a timesaver nor easier to paint, as you basically have to think about light and transitions exactly the same way as NMM. it is cooler though ;P

Such an awesome choice of mini. It definitely suits your style Andy. To me, all those sharp angles and metal areas seem like you would intuitively know where to place the reflections. What I like watching most is where you decide to place the light right next to the dark. You are VERY awesome at this, and I wish I had the same feel for things as you.
You talk about the challenge of deciding what and where to underpaint. Since it is a shiney gray metal, wouldn't you just basecoat the whole thing in a light gray (fortress gray) and then just shade and HL??? Or is there something more to your methods that I am missing.
TMM is for historical miniatures. NMM is for fantasy figures. Makes them look more, well, fantastic. I don't see why there is any debate. *Disclaimer-I'm sure that Skel could show me a mini or two that could change my mind, but by and large I think Andy made the right choice going with NMM.

hey dont go back to the 1930's with this eh? NMM make the mini more cartoony, TMM more "realistic". that is more a matter of taste than something written in stone. i personally prefer "realistic fantasy", not scooby-doo.

All right I'll hold my hands up I was just trying to wind Skelletets up he he I've seen his Tmm and it blows my nmm to smithereens. The main reason I didn't do it Tmm is because I'm sh*t at it!
Under-lighting is were the metal is lit not by the primary source of light i.e. the sun but by the light reflected off the ground or other parts of the body etc. it's always a less bright illumination and is often tinted by the colours of the ground. It's a real pain putting it in so it looks right but when done properly I feel it really gives the mini a great depth and a proper wow factor quite often the effect is subliminal and you don't know why you really like a mini but the reason is good under-lighting.

Now boys, stop fighting over the artistic methods. Lol i think for a future challenge you guys should pick a heavily armored figure and half the group paint TMM and the other half NMM to show it doesn't matter other than personal preferance.
Oh and Andy....this one is already looking like it is headed toward awesome.

I prefer realistic fantasy too. Who doesn't think an actual dragon is cooler than a pretend one?
Unsure about the meaning of the 1930s reference, pardon my ignorance. My opinion is biased I think, because seeing minis done in NMM is what originally attracted me to painting. Some of you guys are illusionists you pull it off so well (points at Andy). So of course I'm just a fan, everyone has their preference. Just remarking that I often see metallics relied upon with historical painting, and NMM used for the inverse.

I kind of had a go at this a few years ago. Its not really a fare example seeing my TMM of the time were bad.

Which one is NMM? Joking...your trademark orange glaze gives it away every time. But I think this goes to show that TMM can be just as brilliant.

Amazing. Just downright shockingly good. He looks like he just stepped off the cover of a fantasy novel. So vivid it looks like animation drawn into a real world setting. I need to change my underpants now. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

How do you determine where to place those light blue glazes?

Just near the top surfaces and either side of the bright glints/highlite. Purple glazes blend down from the blue and into the shadow regions.
