AndyG WIP (pic heavy)

Everyone forgets Washington, where I live, is a weed free zone too. Unfortunately, I am a part of the federal government, where weed is not legal. In fact, if I smoked it I'd get the equivalent of a felony. So I live somewhere where everyone else can do it but me and if I did use it I'd get punished far worse than everyone else would if they couldn't. Lol....mouthful.

Ok next upda......ow shit a hot rock just burnt me let me just put the sp**f down trying to type and toke is a nightmare ;)

aaaany way I'm in trouble I need counceling I feel dirty I need to scrub myself out damn spot etc etc I have started some Tmm!!!

Urgh I bet Skeletets is laughing it up yuk yuk yuk ya damn know it all Sweed ;) I took one proper look at the acres and acres of metal to paint on the 1/10 armoured dude and thought er no it may indeed look loads better nmm but I'd be painting it till Christmas!!

So I cheated I've based coated the metal using the old gw tin bits must have been sitting in my paint collection for ten years or so looks really dark in the pot but comes out quite light on the mini. I'm going to shade and glaze etc etc and stipple and stuff hopefully it will work. Any hints from you Tmm brigade on colours to glaze and shade would be appreciated.

Have you ever tried painting... on weed?

So the advice I got on the TMM was to be careful because as you glaze you add color but also knock down the sparkle. So your glazes are stronger than you think they are. The GW Badab Black ink/wash whatever does seem to go very well with the metalics. Mix mithril silver with tin bitz for highlight?

Really, I just wanted to keep the weed jokes going. lol. Seriously though it's for my glaucoma, uh backache, uh I got glaucoma in my back...

you know... there is something about his face. he look like he need some coffee. bags under the eyes? :)

seriously too me nmm is a faster technique than tmm, as you can wetblend a lot more using nmm. tmm i all about glazing, at least when i paint.
what colors to use... id go for some scaly green-ish or turquoise for the brass, but careful not to overdo it there as this is supposed to be somewhat realistic as it is a historical piece.

I'm glad you prefaced the fact that you're using TMM with "only cuz it's faster." TMMAndy doesn't sound as good to me.

Honestly, Bailey has the perfect tutorial for this. I'd give it a good read.

But some stuff I've picked up when I practice painting TMM in my closet.

Dilute the ish out of metallics. Like you're doing your most watered down glaze. The kind where you just barely want to tint the surface. Because it's so diluted, though, it'll take a ton of layers.

Dilute the the ish out of your glazes. But don't add too many layers.

Go go back over certain spots with your base metal after you glaze to restore some of the sheen.

You can experiment with crazy colors. It seems a lot goes well with metals. But for your standard shade VMC smoke FTW.

Im in sure you knew all of this already.

OH WOW, Now you've gone an done it Andy. Time to put on your big boy pants and show us how to glaze properly.

I'm going to suggest you start with some glazes of a lighter brown than you'd expect and also twice as thin as you'd normally go. My view on it is that you want to keep the metallic sheen BUT use it as the crowning highlights.
Going back to my memory of "TROY" (that's the movie, not the siege, Thank You!) Brad's armour was a rich brown in shadow like Burnt Umber, so it might be a case of gritting your teeth and going another step up the ladder to use water soluble oils. (Combined with W&N odourless medium and it dries quicker.) That will get you rich tonality in the shadows without too much loss in the metallic sheen. (Add a hair drier for quicker results).
Now, when it comes to verdigris, think on this; Achillies was a warrior and his armour was paramount to his survival, so he'd have taken extreme care with it, oiling it and polishing it as soon as he had 'down time'. To me it makes sense that there would be very little green showing and that scratches and dents would be buffed out.

I'd go with some dark green and some rusty red brown (not too orange) glazes. Also some black or really dark brown. As for losing the shine when glazing with regular paint... It actually gives you a very nice tool to play around with. In some areas you may simply not want any metallic shine. If an area is supposed to be in really dark shadow it would look awkward if the area picks up light reflections (now I'm talking real life light reflections) as you turn the piece around. Keeping those areas matte will give you better control over how the piece looks when finished. I guess that is one of the problems, and strengths, with TMM... that you can't control the lighting under which the model is viewed. But, you can control if a surface will be highly reflective or less reflective. Use that as much as you can!
