ANIME FREAKS UNITE!

I\'ve seen a few, but cannot call myself a big fan.

Akira, The Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away (does that count?)

Anyhow, they are all fantastically done, and sends you away with some very odd feelings. You can definately tell they are deeper than what you see, and I can appreciate that. The Japanese influence and having a different cultural background can really be bizarre, at least to my way of thinking. That is not a bad thing, just commenting.

The one thing I can\'t get past is the character animation. The little girl look, especially if the character is supposed to adult, can be a little uncomfortable for me. The big cartoony eyes are tough for me to swallow too. I grew up on gritty comic books and that style of art appeals to me more, but that\'s not to dismiss Anime out of hand. I always wondered why some gritty western cartoons have never been made. Like the Spawn series they did for HBO. But almost all superheros or cool subjects in America get the kiddie treatment and become sanitized and childlike. Where is the true animation for adults outside of anime?

I still want to see a few I hear recommended all the time...Appleseed for instance, but for me the jury is still out.

I wouldn\'t count myself as an anime freak, I have only seen two films; Spirited Away, and recently Howl\'s Moving Castle. I really enjoyed both. calcipher, I know where you got your handle from now :D They\'re great films. By the way, Ghost in the Shell, isn\'t that über-violent? ???

Oh, and

750th POST! Three quarter freak :bouncy:

Penguin, you want to see Elfen Lied. It\'s about elves and music and happiness and stuff. Watch it late at night with the lights out. It\'s happier and cuter that way. <smirk>

Wow. I\'m starting to get that authentic \"anime with no subtitles\" feeling.

Yeah, me too. Even though I watch/have watched several anime (Inuyasha, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, GitS:SAC, Ninja Scroll, Spirited Away, Rurouni Kenshin, FF: Advent Children, etc.). I still only know about 10 words of Japanese and could probably not even form a complete sentence, unless I was quoting song lyrics (like from L\'Arc-en-Ciel, TM Revolution, High and Mighty Color, etc.).

Translations anyone?

:D
