Another sniping witnessed

Hello all,

I posted my latest minis last night:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/62712

And promptly gave myself an 8. Why not? They are not perfect, but you gotta be proud of what you have achieved. No one else will be, except your mom. ;) Errm, back to the point, I waited for them to appear and for the first vote. After the vote came in, my score was a....

5!

Now that seems a little harsh to me. If my arithmetic is correct, that would mean he gave me a 2. I think it\'s a little better than a 2. Do you think it was karma for me being overly proud? ;) Or maybe he didn\'t like purple and orange.

In other news, if you have a moment and would not mind leaving me a note, I\'d really love some feedback. :)

Thanks!

Mc

ps: the scores have evened out considerably since then, thank the Buddha.

Well, there are some that think that modesty is a virtue, and therefore will give a low score to a miniature if they notice that the first vote is \"un-modest\".

As you have noticed, scores tend to even out over time, but I\'d advice not to vote on your own minis when you post them, that way, the score can only climb ;)

Sorry Smoth, I thought they were between 7 and 8. Erred on the side of generous to offset some of the others.

They are based well, they are shaded quite well. They have expression on a well sculpted mini. Granded that they are gobos, but they are well done.

I feel that pain

Yup, I have seen scores plummet in a hurry many many times.

Some of my figs, including one posted a few days back, must have had 3\'s or 2\'s plastered on them, since the vote totals were already in the mid 30\'s.

Also, I have watched our ranking drop from a tie at 77th (where we had been for many weeks), down to 93rd in 4 days. Very strange

It\'s possible that the one who gave you a 2 thought it was a 5 and meant to even the whole score.
But it\'s never a good thing to give yourself high scores, people will punish you for being too audacious. Doesn\'t make a good impression really.

hmm...

well, I don\'t think your 8 was out of line at all, that is what I voted on it....

My question is this...how does a \'sniper\' know that you have given it an 8? I thought until a mini had about 5 votes it had a question mark by the score....

???

Yep...like Errex was sayin\'....I usually don\'t vote on my own minis.
And if you feel you need to vote on your own, just save it until later. Regardless, even with the sniping, it evens out. I wouldn\'t lose sleep over it. The mini you\'ve shown here is a nice one, and the score is startin\' to reflect it.
Most of the fine people here try to be somewhat objective when they vote. I respect \'em for it.

That\'s because you use \"Hide Scores\". Otherwise, a mini appears with it\'s current score up in the header no matter how many or few votes it has. Once voted on, if it has less than 5 votes, it appears with question marks in the little thumbnail up in the righthand corner of the next page.

Thanks to everyone for your support and for your comments. I was not really too worried about the score, I just was shocked that someone would give me 2. Even Smoth thought it was better than a 2.

By the way, do you like my new avatar?

Smoth, thanks for your comments. It\'s interesting to hear what people don\'t like, especially when the comments are related to painting technique and style, as yours were. I actually agree that the highlights were a little harsh. In fact, can you see any differences between the left one (the bomber) and the right one? I did the right one first and decided to do more transitions on the bomber. I\'d be interested to know if you think the bomber\'s highlights are still too harsh.

Oh, and Mike: keep your dang hammer away from me! :D

Oh, and Mike: keep your dang hammer away from me!

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
\"\'Tis some visitor,\" I muttered, \"tapping at my chamber door-
Only this, and nothing more.\" :

Don\'t bet on it! ;)

it is kinda hard to tell to be honest with you. I was commenting more to the point about how your highlights are strong and your shadows are so dark. It seems very abrupt.

On the one with the hat the shadows on the face and hat seem a bit better as they are not quite as deep. I felt that the shadows were too strong for such bright highlights.

The one on the right is the one that really struck me as harsh. that bright lavender highlight on his robes really is just too strong for me. I love purple but this is purple highlighted with a fushia like brightness.

To me there is something about subtle highlights that strike me as beautiful. For example: Orchid\'s taryn

see the purple isn\'t too deep and it has some highlighting but also notice that the highlights are very subtle.

The colors on your goblins go from black to what looks like lavender. There is little in the way of a transition. It is black.. dark purple... some purple... the BRIGHT lavender. I think if you skip out on the lavender and just go smoothly to purple it will look much better.

However these are all comments on style. Alot of people like your particular style. because strongly contrasting highlights look good on table top.. or so they say. I cannot stand it. again it is only my opinion.

Profile of a sniper...

Most of the sniper types can barely read so this is safe here to lip \'em off in the forums. Anywho, here goeslol

\"My name is Timmy, uh was, but now I make my friends call me The Tim. Man liberary (sic) class sucks- good thing Mr Bonest is such a \'bone, he don\'t look at what we surf. But, to(sic) many spot checks lately by the IT f*& and we have passwords from Mr Hanes the principal to own up to what we look at- gotta wait till home time and look at the good stuff over on Dave\'s mom\'s computer.HAHAHA, you know hat I mean. Anyways, this geek in class, Herve, always looks at his gay \"cool miniature\" stuff and we saw that you get to rate it- I love to crusify his fat butt elves whenever we get the chance. Then we go killing the marks on all those other goofs too, we all go throug and hit em with 1 and 2\'s- except for orcs. Orcs are cool. mUST HURT THEM IN THE MIND\"

So you see kids, do ya really want \"THE Tims\" of the world burning ya, huh?- <said in Eric Foreman voice>.

lollollollol In other words \"don\'t woryy..be happy, ooh ooh ooh oo oo...\"
OR: kinda like getting \"Timmed\" in Magic, just a 1 damage point flesh wound ,but it can pinch a bit if at the wrong time.

I wonder if you shouldn\'t be allowed to give a score 3 or below without a comment. It would definitely cut down on people randomly scoring others low and then plusing up their friends. I don\'t mind harsh criticism as long as it\'s constructive.

Aloha,

John:cool::cool:
