I couldn\'t find the last thread, so this is for anyone who wants to post pics of where they live.

bridge6upload0oj.jpg

Built by the Sunderland based company that did Sydney\'s bridge (a fair bit smaller, designed second but built first).

bridge2upload5rb.jpg

The Milennium bridge, Britains best \"building\" 2003. Pedestrians only, but it allows river traffic through by tilting up around 90 degrees.

Angel of the North

Grey street, officially England\'s most beautiful street (as voted for by members of RICS). Designed mainly by Dobson iirc, includes Newcastle\'s theatre (not shown).

A couple more here-

As a Geordie in Exile I can say a few things about the pictures.

1: The Quayside where the main shots of the bridges is taken from is a damn sight cleaner than it used to be.

2: I\'ve walked across all but one of those bridges in the first Photo. (Several times)

3: The Millenium bridge shows up the one in London. (Big Style).

4: The \"Angel of The North\" is the biggest piece of junk masquerading as art I\'ve ever seen. (Other than that fibre glass piece of rubbish purporting to be the Tortoise & Hare in Gateshead). The A.T.N just looks like a small aircraft landed on it\'s tail.

5: Grey Street is a remarkable piece of architecture. Most of those buildings shown have 5 or 6 levels of cellars/basements, which go down to what was the level of the Dean (or Small river) which runs (ran) down the length of Grey Street and gives Deane Street it\'s name. (Somewhere deep under all the road and buildings is a pre 16th century bridge which the current street alignment follows.)

6: As a policeman my father used to have to do point duty at the bottom of Grey Street befor the Traffic lights were installed. (Late 50\'s early 60\'s).

But there are other pictures you could have used, which could have served to show the older parts of \'The Toon.
Such as:-
\"The Cooperage\" One of the best venues in Newcastle. Saw Jimmy Naill there once.
\"The Keep\" & \"Black Tower\". The remains of the Castle.
\"The Bridge Hotel\" (Great beer served) to name but a few.

The Angel of the North is very interesting...whats the story behind that, and why do you say its junk Mr. Dragon?

I\'d post some pics of where i live, but if you\'ve seen one cornfield, you\'ve seen them all...

that ATN is odd allright.
How does it keep from blowing over or snapping in the breaze?

Where I grew up you\'d occasionally get near 90mile per hour winds so tall wide things are nonexistent.

ok, I\'m in. Pictures of where I live:

some of the most photographed parts of the world are within 20 miles of my house. When we moved here, my oldest was 4 and thought we were moving next door to the Magic Kingdom Castle - she was slightly dissapointed that our neighbor was human.

(not my kids - just stole the pics off of the net)

1) Yes indeed. I saw on northeast news the other day that they\'ve just cleaned it out a bit more (100 tons of debris, including 3 cars).

4) I must disagree sir! In comparison to some pirces of \"art\" it is positively a masterpiece. Granted, it\'s no 100ft bronze statue of Nero, but it is still a lasting monument, and I quite like the modern style they went with.

7) Yeah, these are mainly the newer landmarks (check out the sage \"armadillo\" music centre in the second pic), but we are fortunate here to have many ancient structures and landmarks, I will try and find some pics of the castles etc tonight.

@bayrodney: If you think that is \'Awesome\' you are far too easily impressed, sir!

The Angel of the North as thought of by a great number of people in Gateshead and Newcastle.

This is the facing view that is seen by people driving into Gateshead from the south.

It was and still is part of a very controversial approach by Gateshead council to use art to \"Raise the Image\" and increase investment in Gateshead.
The National Lottery supported this lump of metal to the tune of £584,000 and of course Gateshead council had to match that amount as well.

In my personal opinion it\'s a great pity that they didn\'t invest that money in the support of the communities and infrastructure in the Gateshead Council district, rather than a monument to the Councillors ego, as which it has been refered to.

Some people see it as a welcoming symbol. I see it as a blocking image.
But as I said this is my personal opinion.

I like it. That\'s the problem with this country. We always count the cost of things in teachers and baby incubators. Wander around city\'s in Spain and the like, and there is a multitude of strange sculptures liberally smattered about.

The Lottery should be purely used for feelgood stuff and things that would otherwise not get funding. AOTN is pretty iconic and I\'m sure it has helped to draw people into Newcastle and Gateshead and has probably already paid for itself I would have thought.:)
