Well for me I'd have to say "the jury's still out on that one".
Been aware of his work for a while and to be honest he comes across sometimes as yet another self-publicist (*), occasionaly producing "the emperors new clothes" and proclaiming them as ART.




(*Although nowhere in the league of the Hirst's or Emin's of this world)

Like DR said, his some of his stuff can come off as the emperor's new cloths. It occured to me that much of what makes his work look good to me is that it's often very well photographed. Without that it loses A LOT. That said, there was a certain..................zen quality to many of his pieces.

I'm not sure about that really. I think his enthusiasm with his work shines through. I really have no knowledge of Andy Goldsworthy being a self-publicist. I think cynicism is at a minimum. He's a guy who goes into the wilds and just makes works that harmonise with the environment. Obviously the transient pieces like the leaves in water and ice sculptures need to be photographed to make a record. His less transient installation pieces however are actually quite powerful and occassionally on a large scale and really do have an impact when you see them in context with the environment. These aren't in swanky galleries but tend to be out in the wilds too, so require a bit of effort to go and see them.

Can't say I've ever heard of him, but I don't know much about fine art.

I can say, however, that his images are compelling, and I really enjoy looking at them.
