I\'m trying to make myself a better painter. Aside from time and practice, has anyone stumbled on some literature that helped them greatly in painting there minis?

I\'ve had all the GW painting and modelling guides, except the terrain one, and they helped tremendously. I think the older guides were probably the best because they were written by Mike McVey and he really knew how to explain his style. The old ones are out of print.

How to paint Citadel Miniatures.
The book is at a surprisingly high standard for GW painting guides. It goes through all the basics, but also things like blending and advanced layering. I\'ve looked through it lots of times, very good stuff! I\'d pick it up.

IMHO, the HT Paint Citadel Models is really for beginners - Or it\'s all about getting armies on the table - it doesn\'t cover at all what is \"art\" painting like what Rackham does or Golden Demon-style painting achieves- I assume you aspire to something more than tabletop stuff ?? It\'s a decent book and I have a copy here in my lap but it I\'m too advanced for it ... (and I\'m barely a 7 painter)
If you want to IMPROVE your painting and you can already paint then I\'d suggest the monthly White Dwarf.
Specifically, the Eavy Metal articles - these are hands down the best I\'ve ever seen - they tell you exactly how they got specific effects and they give color recipes in GW paints so you can recreate it all at home. Any one issue may not be that useful but soon, after a few issues, you\'ll have several great recipes at your disposal. They nearly always demonstrate how to paint the new models but the colors are universally applicable.
For example, CMON\'s own tHaye (Tammy) wrote a great article on a Nurgle Chaos Lord in the new Issue 289. Fanastic! I don\'t care for Chaos at all but there are things in that that I had never thought of. The Flesh recipe on page 112 for example is neat:
Basecoat in Terracotta
Highlight it with Dwarf Flesh
Watered down Flesh Ink with some Red Ink over that.
Dwarf Flesh again on cheeks and nose follwed by a final highlight of Elf Flesh.
Lastly, she applied red, blue and purple inks into the recesses...
I wonder however if they get paid by how many tins they have to open - or if they are challenged to use every color in the range on every model ... ha! But at any rate, the end results are what matters and every month there\'s some great reference material in there ....

Painting Guides
I probably should have said this in my previous post but the old GW painting guides are still available on ebay. I see them all the time although you always have to pay what they went for when they came out, $20. Just search for Eavy Metal on ebay and you\'ll find them. I don\'t think there\'s any now but if you keep checking they\'ll pop up again.

I completely agree. Add to the articles here, the various discussions in these forums and links to peoples\' sites that appear here. In particular, I\'ve found the \"tips & tutorials\" on Jenova\'s site to be of great value
Oh! And if you really want a hard copy of the articles here, there\'s nothing wrong with the CMON Annual.

But this site (and others relating to the art of mini-painting) has been the best resource, source for inspiration, and guide to better painting, basing, color choice...you name it, it\'s been covered.
One thing you don\'t get from books is the great sense of cameraderie and encouragement that these sites provide. It really beats the \'ol days of painting in a vacuum.

I learned with/from another painter that had worked for one of the old mini companies (that is no longer in business). He taught me to wash/drybrush and even blend (in the days of oil-based paints - every try to apply a wash). I thought I was pretty good. I could hold my own against anything I saw for sale in a game store display case done by a \"pro\". Then I discovered this site. Humbled is the only way to describe it.
But I am working up the curage to post some of my later works (much imprived in the last year). 90% of this improvement is from you guys telling me not only that it can be done, but how to do it. I have explored painting techniques that I would not have thought possible a few years ago.
