Just wanted to know how many of you study a martial art out there, and what it is. I\'ve been doing Jodo for a year, and have about 4 years of kenjitsu. (In other words, one year stick fighting, 4 years sword fighting). That\'s all!

Krom, how do you like Kung Fu? I eventually wanted to take up something that didn\'t guarantee I would get absolutly demolished without a weapon in my hand. And the jodo is enjoyable, but it\'s a little lonely since there\'s only 20 of us on the East coast of the US. :(

I wanted to do Kendo, but I couldn\'t find a place in Connecticut that was in driving distance.

Hi dougaderly,
I can only comment on Wing Chun, its fast hand orientated with low kicks and should be safe to train, however that depends on the mentality of the teacher!!!

It was Bruce Lee\'s original style and the one that HIS Jeet Kune do was based on.

Its always what styles you have near you, I had to travel 140 miles to train 1 1/2 hrs when I first started, did that for 5 years, 3 times a week.

If you are looking for a new style, find a teacher you like/respect first and make sure he\'s good.

140 miles... that\'s dedication.

Yeah, I\'ve learned the only way to really pick a teacher is to find one you like. I think it\'s why I\'m travelling what I consider a long trip (An hour each way) to do jodo.

I\'m old enough to not ask what\'s best or what art could beat any other :D

Yes, wise words, I take the attitude that its supposed to be fun, I have only 14 students now, and thats enough, we train hard, have a laugh, have a chat, sometimes go for a drink after. Its like having close mates, like in the army, a special bond occours.

Its a total change from daily life, refreshingly so.

A similar question was asked some time ago. A good thread it was too! Find it >>here<<

I\'ve been through a number of martial arts; Judo, Jiujitsu, fencing and archery. Never found one that \'did\' it for me until last year when I started Taijiquan. I wish that I\'d found it years ago.

I studied Shotokan karate for a few years... about 10 years ago now. A couple years ago I took a short class in Shorinryu karate.

Currently, I\'m with Khaylanis in the fat, lazy git club.

Did about 2 years of Cuong Nhu. My husband is a black belt in Yoshikai. Now we both do Western martial arts (aka medieval sword fighting and grappling).

Reading these make me feel like an old man...

about 25 years through various arts. Not much Chinese--mostly Okinawan, Japanese, and Korean.

Hold various Dans in three. Competed with AAU for several years. After that I fought full contact for a bit. Taught for about 10 years. My preference is studying/teaching the philosophy and bunkai of traditional Japanese arts.

However, I\'m old, busy, and not nearly as energetic as I used to be....so, I\'ll just live vicariously through you guys and gals.:D

My wife pointed out a Kendo class that runs on weekend just last week and now I am going to check that out.
