i would still be playing if i could find a good group. i stopped around \'96 when i got out of the army but had been playing off and on since the early \'80\'s. the only version i really could get into was 2nd edition and the \"basic D&D\" that came in the box sets. i also dabbled in Shadowrun, Gamma World(wish they could have gotten the rules to work), star frontiers, and a few other RPG\'s that elude me right now.

2nd ed?

Man I must be old. I started playing in \'78/\'79 with the original books (anyone remember the small hand held ones?). Hell I still have one or two of the originals.

Anyhoo I still have 2 of the original hard cover DM guides, 5 or 6 player\'s handbooks, the Monster manual (man we waited for that with baited breath in about 1980) and about 15 kg of the old original lead from the early 80s....

Then I met the love of my life, had kids and the rest is history. It now fills a big box in the basement.

So I guess my question is: was second ed. the first hard cover books from 1980/81 or is that considered 1st ed. and if so, what is the original game considered?

Once Agian thank you for all of your comments :D @JimG The book\'s you are refering t are 1st edition. the really small ones that have about 40 pages or so are the original D&D books,I have a couple more as collector though. 2ND E started after D&D so it goes D&D,dvanced D&D,Advanced D&D 2nd E, that stopped in about 89 or 90 I think then they came out with AD&D with out the 2nd E on the book that was the last of the TSR line then WOTC took over. :)

But, i am building up an adventure team and working on baddies. i\'ve got a human monk and a giant in my galary, and i\'m ALMOST done with my goblin assassin!

i have downloaded \"OpenRPG\" and profile sheets off the internet for playing D&D and similar games online. Maybe we could set up an online adventuring team? i know it totally destroys using minis, but at least we\'d be playing.

Oh, and i got mIRC too, but i also have MSN to chat on. (Although you can chat right in OpenRPG... it\'s more for getting everyone together for setting up the game. Works better than e-mails IMHO)

Anyone up for an adventure?:D
Hello Itchy Wish you lived closer it\'s hard to find people who want to play as bad as it sound\'s like you do. There are alot of problems with online gamine when it comes to sessions like D&D there\'s the relay for the signals of the webcam\'s and you do lose alot of the fun out of it. But for someone like you who has nobody by them then that maybe your only option :( but you could always post a forum looking for people to play in your area?

Gaming for Non-math people!

I had never played until I started dating Grumb (18+ years ago). One of his friends didn\'t think AD&D was \"specific\" enough so he wrote his own game. It was interesting, but doing the math for every roll sucked.

Then, he went back to school because he was bored with programming (is now a Dr. of Quantum Theory Physics) and ended up moving to FL.

Scott/Grumb started playing with another group of good friends and after years of watching them play I finally joined in. Why did it take years for me to join you ask? The Math - I REALLY hated all the calculations for every roll & I hated not knowing which die to use for which roll....

I REALLY love 3E! It\'s so much simpler. I don\'t feel like an ignoramus because now I know which die to use AND I really get into playing because I\'m not so worried about the rolls - well, at least what die and number I should roll. I really enjoy the game so much more.

Now, if we could just get our dm to loosen up and let us use some of the expansion manuals/modules...He\'s a real tight-arse sometimes! (If it\'s not in the Core then we can\'t use it. Big Bummer!)

Heck, I\'m a fourth-level druid who\'s been searching, repeatedly, for a hawk - in the forest - for almost a year and I can\'t seem to find one. (Does this tell you something?)

Well hello RedDawn, your correct there is alot of math in the older versions of D&D and can be painful if you don\'t like math, personally I liked it the big bag of dice was part of the game and gave it varity as far as damage situations go. But that has become a problem for my wife who hate\'s math. And after so many reply\'s to the 3rd edition I am going to have to try to incorparate slowly or just switch all at once not for sure but sound\'s like It would really be worth tring. I know what you mean by a harsh DM my original DM was like that if it was not in the book then the answer was no. so when I took over I put alot of my own rules in for a little more leway but you got to have strucksure or it just an\'t no fun. What moduals are you refering to? 2nd in to 3rd One more thing that I want to bring up in this forum is there any forum already on CMON for DM and players alike to share Quest or character class or spell\'s with all the info, that one\'s self may have wrote up inaddition to what the books already have :D

Hello to you too, Torath! I misspoke myself when I called them \"modules.\" I really should have said guidebooks or accessories. There are some really cool guidebooks that go more in-depth into different classes (?) of characters. For example, I\'ve got \"Masters of the Wild\" put out by WOTC. It\'s a guidebook to Barbarians, Druids, and Rangers. It\'s got some new spells, information on animals, skills and feats - all kinds of cool stuff. Does our DM let us use any of it? Nope.

The biggest problem I have with him, is that I get all excited and want to play more, more, more when I see this new stuff and then he goes and says, \"no, no, no.\" I really start to lose enthusiasm for the game - especially after I\'ve bought the darn thing.

As to your other question about whether there\'s already a forum about D&D quests, etc. I don\'t know. I\'m new here at CMON and haven\'t made it past the 2nd page of the General Discussion page. I do know that there\'s a \"When is it time to get a new DM\" thread that appears at the top of the General Discussion page because I just posted my angst with our DM!

I\'ll keep my eyes open for one. If there\'s not one I\'m sure loads of people will contribute if you start one. I would love to create quests, etc., but I just don\'t want to DM - I\'m not comfortable being in charge of a game.

THAC0 is so easier, just sibtract AC you are attacking from your thaco to see if you hit.

i DESPISE WotC and all they make so i still love 2nd AD&D. i started playing in \'82.

as far as i am concerened the only real D&D is TSR...not WotC and Hasbro crap. yeah Hasbro.....im still waiting for them to add \"my little pony\" to the D&D game.

its about as funny as think if fisher price took over GW....you\'d build your rhinos with mega blocks.
