Any tips for improving?

Hi everyone! So I've posted a few of my minis on here and I'm generally happy with how they've scored, each one I've painted has increased in score. At the moment my highest is 7.2 on my Medusan immortals (Quite surprised to find out these are the only ones on CMON, they're lovely models), I'd like to aim to hit the higher 7's on my next submission and was looking for a few tips on doing that. My thoughts of the 2 areas I need to improve are my line highlighting and my bases, both of which are basic. Any thoughts guys?

Your medusa and the spider are both stellar. Tbh probably in the 8s if you would have taken better photos. First the cloth backdrop isn't working in your favor. It shows the 3d quality, when you want a curved paper backdrop to make it look like the mini is suspended in space. Next, the photos utilize very poor lighting. You need better indoor lighting and maybe a light box set up or whatever it's called that the kids use. I just take mine outside on a slightly overcast day OR at first light OR in the shade and the lighting comes out perfect. Anyway, it would beat what you have going on with your lighting situation. Try reshooting those same medusa under optimal conditions and I bet they go up a full point.

You our know your weaknesses elsewhere. It's hard to score in the 9s without display quality basing. No advice here other than to invest in the knowledge and materials. True creativity is a prerequisite.

Other than that, it helps to have a named special technique, like NMM or OSL. They both contribute to high scores I've noticed. Good luck.

my real question is what you want to improve? your painting or the score.

for the first all I know is: learn from others who, in your opinion, paint better than you and practice, practice, practice.
if the later: networking is the answer. right now an average submissing gets 30-40 votes. So finding 50-60 friends / local players can pretty much guarantee a 8+ or 9+ (most gamers vote high for anything above ttq). So build up the friend-circle with g+/fb/twitt/whatever. That said in the long run you won't really enjoy it as it's a fake fame.

The basing leaves them in the realm of tabletop, albeit high end and nicely painted. Some really nice basing would pop them up to 8 easily. Don't sweat the scores, like Maxxxx pointed out they are easily skewed.

Looking at your best scored image what I see:
- you can be more brave with the highlighting
- work more on the transitions, the black-grey is a bit rough at some parts. (+ even though you have transitions, but for SM-s it's easy to fall back to edge-highlighting only like GW, so please remember, that even SM's need a color transition between dark and light besides the edging)
- well I have to agree with Zab, for 8+ you'd need more elaborate bases. Think them as helping tell a story (and for units a unitbase could be helpful too, so you can make a bigger scenery that integrates with the figure's bases)
- well it's not really an useful advice for iron-hands, but learn color-theory and learn to use colors more effectively.
- shading with multiple colors on the metals help too (so not just a wash, but a controlled shading with blues-greens-browns and black for example, the color is mainly to add interest or make something pop against the others (see color theory above))
- it will be a b*tch to photo, but learn to use textures, at least gloss-satin-matt. For example (staying with IH): a metal part shaded with brown and glossed to make it look like it's oily besides a black armor part, that's given a blue-ish shade + matt varnish --> double, even triple contrast (dark-light, warm-cold, glossy-matt) (Btw the one above may not work, but it is an idea to try)

Thanks for all the replies guys you've been genuinly helpful! Kenan, thanks for your 7 step guide:mad-tongue:, I'm currently on step 4 but I've missed out 2, could you recommend any vids on youtube? Thanks for the photo advice Bloodfather, I'm gonna have a read of a few of the tutorials to see if I can improve that aspect of my submissions. I have yet to try NMM or OSL, I'm working up the courage to take the plunge, I find it difficult to practice as if things don't go the way I want them to look I generally lose interest, I'll just have to ignore myself and get on with it I guess!
Zab I completely agree with your comment about the basing, it was only when the photo was on my laptop I could see it was lacking. At least it's easy to add things to bases :curl-lip:
Maxx I don't want to be one of those people who paint for the gratification of others so it is my painting I want to improve not my score as such. That being said my immortals scored higher than I originally placed them as hence my question as an 8 seemed a bit more attainable. Thanks also for the tips regarding shading and the pointers for making my metal pop, it's one area that I personally feel I am lacking in. I hadn't thought of doing a unit base so I might have a crack at one later. I think I'll try some of the different textures as technical practise on some of my old models, sounds like an interesting concept.
Thanks again for all the replies, I was a little worried I'd get ignored or shot down being a newer member but it's nice to see truly helpful people on here, cheers!

Personally, I love seeing painters get better. I love the "ah hah" moments we all have. Never, ever feel reluctant to ask for help. If you look at my WIP I seriously ask for help or advice on everything-from which mini to buy to what color to apply to literally asking someone to run my pics through Photoshop (thanks in advance Demihuman).I love this stuff so I'm glad to help if I can.

Your work looks great. Remember, better photos and improved basing.

or you could get a shock collar,.. and modify it to electricute you when you make a bad brush stroke,... that might force better painting,..
