I think its also called a Campaign Hat, and was worn by the US Army from the Late 19th Century through WWI - especially in the Cav.
Originally it was known as a campaign hat in the days of Black Jack Pershing. It later became uniform for Drill instructors throughout the service. In the Army we called it a \"round brown\" or Smokey bear\" hat. The Cavalry still wear a similar hat that is deep blue in color and is usually referred to as a \"stetson\" (from the manufacturer name). The Cav version resembles the cavalry hats worn by soldiers in the 1800\'s. It has braiding on it and crossed sabers.
