Anybody any knowledge of Solid State Drives

I'm currently looking into getting a Solid State Drive for my desktop pc and have done a little bit of investigation into them. Just wondering if anybody else had any experience of them - the technology seems to have developed in leaps and bounds over the past 10 months or so and I'm happy to have real people's opinions on it.

Very expensive, you need to seriously analyse the cost-benefit ratio to decide if it's worthwhile (I expect them to be the default standard in a couple of years though). If you want a perkier HDD have you considered a Western Digital VelociRaptor. It's better suited for a home budget & will still provide a kick performance wise. If you do go for an SSD solution please be sure to NEVER update the firmware until a month after release, too many stories of drives being bricked, might be okay if you're a techy type but I reckon regular users desire stability first. Hmmm... never heard of it. Can get a 60Gb SSD for same price as 1Tb HDD. But, I am intrigued, but it appears that it doesn't hold much drastic need. Plus, the 4yo Dell I've got now is doing well. Wonder if you could RAID these? Sounds like it'd be silly to do so, as boot and access times seem to be the benefits. Maybe lifespan is better. Hmmm.

Reckon you'd be better off investing in a decent RAID NAS server or similar. Loads more options for backing up data and you get the added bonus of creating a nice LAN and media streaming.

Cheers for the comments, basically I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and that has been coded so that solid state drives have a very good performance (something called 'trim' - I won't bore you with the geek speak ). I'd heard from somebody that they had windows loading in 34 seconds and the actual performance of the system was fantastic, so I was thinking of adding one as my boot drive and keeping my existing drive setup for storage (pair of raided 400gb sata's). Sounds like I'm currently better off sticking with the setup I've got and waiting until the prices have come down.

SSD are a strange item.
I have one in my PHCH, as I need something totally silent. Performance wise, for an OS, it's an ok choice, but cost wise, a raptor is still kinda better.

I have a 30Go SSD, just for the OS. 'm a player,so a 300Go SSD would be great since load time are going down, but in the end, except for the PCHC, I'm still using Raptor and it's fast enough.

One thing though, if you have win7, you need to have a SSD with a Trim enable firmware (OCZ just realesed those for vertex for example)

Probaably not worth it right now, but it won't be long before it is.
