anyone fix washing machines

right well when used the drum made some horrible noises and a smell of burning. i have checked the belt and the carbon brushes and they appear fine. with the belt of the motor can be moved no problem but the drum is pretty much stuck fast. there has been a small leakage where the drum pivot attaches at the back. so i think it is something to do with the drum rather than the motor.

Not huge on washing machines, but it sounds like youve got the seal at the bass of your drum gone, which would possibly stick the drum, and give you that lovely smell of burning electrical death, either from the remains of the seal being heated from the friction, or the motor straining its little guts out trying to push the thing round.
Either way, Im not sure washing machines are fixable, at least unless you really know what your doing.

I don\'t know what prices are like, but the assessment about the motor straining to move the drum sounds pretty spot on, based on the limited information.
Probably going to be pretty costly.
If you have to replace the drum, or the motor, you\'re really better off getting a new machine. At least around here.

You could always just beat your wife until she hand cleans it all for you?

Well more details would be nice. But it sounds like the bearing that the drum spins on is seized.
You say the brushes look ok? Have you run the motor without the belt on? If so does is spark alot? Are the faces of the brushes nice and shiney or are they burnt?
The bearing on the back of the drum would usully be mounted in a bracket across the back of your machine. This is usually pressed steel or moulded plastic. If the motor is ok then a new bracket with bearing pressed in is an option. The cost varies from machine to machine. Some you can remove the bearing and just replace. As someone mentioned the rear seal will have to be replaced aswell.
Its all fairly simple.
