i want to distinguish each of my imperial guard units, ive got them all painted the same (praetorians) and i am looking for cool ideas on how to individualize each unit without adding a new color to the models. the only thing i can think of is maybe some decals on the bases.

anyone seen anything cool lately with unit i.d.\'s ?

Squad marking on the shoulder guards, some roman numerals maybe ? Like I,II,III,IV,V and stuff. You can also use the decal set. Or maybe a different colored logo on the shoulder guards, some kind of logo for that army.

Different coloured moustaches? hehehe :)
Like johnboyjjb said give us a photo or two and then inspiration will flow.
Have you done them like Zulu?

here is what i have done so far, but i really need some way to distuinguish units. im leaning towards decals with unit number on the bases, but im afraid that might be too boring. heres a look so far at some completed

You may be able to do a unit decal on the side of the helmets. It doesn\'t have to be large.

Think similar to the officer markings on the helmets in \"saving private ryan\"

Otherwise you could change the colour of the imperial eagle on the chest, although I know you said you didn\'t want to add any more colours.

Probably way too complicated but way cool in my opinion would be to carve a tiny stamp in something hard (femo, greenstuff, whatever) then put a tiny ball of soft GS on the center front of each helmet and stamp each unit with a different stamp, like a tiny wax signet seal.

LOL

looking at the picture here I thought the guy on the far right was kneeling with his hands in the air in sign of surrender.

I saw your gallery and figured out what he\'s really doing, but I think the surrender would make a gread custom.

Come up with a numbering scheme that is small and put it on the right shoulder pad of all the minis. my other thought was the corner of the lapel. I wouldn\'t use roman numerals in a section that small. Probably bars and dots of different colors for ranks.

You could probably do numbers on the epaulets with a micro-pen.

Or simply paint over one of the shoulder pads in another color. You could even half, or quarter the pads in two different colors to look heraldric.

i know this sounds really obvious but try just painting the nubers on the edge of the base. there will be more room than on the models themselves
