Anyone on Google + Visit the Mini Painting Hangout

Okay so I don't have a local painting group I can get together with and chat about painting - while painting. So I thought I'd try a Hangout - if you have a mic and webcam - or just a mic and belong to Google + you can jump on in there and we can chat and paint.

But I warn ya - I might scare folks since I've been working on this stuff all day - I'm a mess! lol!

So let's talk shop as long as I don't have to type, I'm good.

My Google + is warhorseminiatures. Hope you can stop on by. Just let me know if you need help joining.

Let's try a little planning! Hangout schedule Saturday 5:00pm U.S. Central time!

Since I'm sitting here painting right next to my laptop anyway. I thought if I told folks about the Hangout being open SATURDAY, JULY 14TH AT 5:00 PM U.S. CENTRAL TIME we might get some folks able to drop in and say hi.

To be absolutely honest, I actually Google's set up. I know they're trying to compete with Facebook for social networking. Truth be told, I can't stand FB, especially the Timeline stuff now. I like the layout and set up Google has going even though it takes a little getting used to.

It really sucks painting in a vacuum over here so I really would like to see if a voice/video online painting group works. It's real time, if you have a webcam (not required) you can see what folks are working on and the best thing is with a mic (required), there's no need to type so hands can stay busy painting. It will be particularly handy if someone has questions or is having a hard time with something.

Me - I just want to talk about painting because I don't have any painters in the local area. It's boring! I'll play my now memorized painting vids just to listen to someone talk about painting and different ideas.

You don't have to paint to join in but do understand sometimes someone might have to concentrate intently while tackling something difficult. So I'll schedule for Saturday evening 5:00pm Central time. Although I'll be on earlier because I know that's getting late for the folks across the pond.

International peeps - double check the fine print because I don't want anyone getting charged for anything. What I've seen thus far is there is only a charge if someone outside the US can't connect with a computer and one of us in the States has to call their mobile to bring them into the meeting. So unless someone has to take extra steps, it should be free but be alert just in case. With Games Day fast approaching this seems like the easiest and fastest way to get a live painting group together. I'd try at the local game store but right now I don't have the time to pick everything up and move it back and forth. Maybe after GD.

You will need a Google+ account
Webcam is optional
Headset or mic is required
You may also need to download and install Google's small vid/voice chat application to your computer. And I think it works with mobile phones too but I haven't checked that out yet. If you need to use your phone, jump over to Google early and check out the help files.

Hangouts are limited to 10 people so get here early. If the Hangout is full don't abandon it completely - it's possible folks will cycle out due to time zone differences and you will be able to join. I look forward to chatting with everyone. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since space is limited, I can't post a link or anything here. The invitation is public so you should find it under kathrynloch or warhorseminiatures on Google+. If not, send me a PM with your gmail addy and I'll email you an invite so you can find it.

So bring your paints, minis, questions, and be prepared to have a fun conversation!

Cheers,
Kath

Already checked and it looks like there is an app, at least for iPhones. And I really don't join social nets (MySpace, FB, etc) but this is the first I've heard about the hangouts. So I'll probably have to get the account. Unfortunately I won't be calling in, but thought I'd post the phone info.

I've got one local paint up (and I believe one member is a Reaper studio painter). It's a bit of a drive and takes me away from family, so I've only gone once. But I think this could be a really cool thing to do. I'll have to get my side set up soon. Do you think you'd make this a standing meet, or just post whenever someone is willing/planning?

Heya Pegazus - glad you checked it out! :D

Well, I would absolutely love to make it a regular thing. But first we need to see how the program functions - it should do pretty well - the premise and technology isn't anything new. Friends and I were using Skype to coordinate members for the game Tribal Wars and Team Speak or Ventrillo when I played Age of Conan.

I understand the 10 person limit - getting too many would be an absolute nightmare but I also everyone to join if they are interested. If Team Speak is still free and unlimited (it's been years) that may work better. Not sure but that's something that needs to be checked.

So I would absolutely LOVE to have a regular meeting for painting but there's a few things we need to test out first.

I think it would be perfect for me because most of us already know each other - although it is a public invite so we might get the curious popping in. Most of us are adults or at the very least mature. Going into a gaming store - of course we've got the young kids. Most of 'em are fantastic but many times there's the punk that drives you insane. ;) I know starting a painting group here I won't be finding anyone my age interested. So I'd end up herding kids one way or another. ;) A worthwhile project on its own - but I also need to be able to paint and finish stuff. Then last but not least - no hauling my stuff back and forth! I'm one of those who has to take the kitchen sink. Fortunately I'm a first rate packer and can load my Honda six ways to Sunday very efficiently. lol! But damn that's a lot of work!

Gee the more I think about it the better this online thing is looking. lol!

When I went to ReaperCon, my friend Derek is from CO. and he goes to the painting group in Denver I believe. Jennifer Kaufman is one member and there are quite a few top freelance painters who take part. I was jealous hearing about it. Somehow they got a cluster of pro mini painters who focus on Reaper stuff in Denver. I tried to talk them into moving to Southeast Texas. For some reason they weren't too wild about the idea. ;) But with gas doing this crazy up down thing and the family...extra drive time just adds more stress sometimes.

Anyway, let's see how it goes and if it works and we get enough interested people, I wouldn't mind making it a regular thing.

hehe! Cool! Crys!

If anyone else is interested we still have room (at least according to my accepted invitations. I'm going to log off for a minute, grab a bite to eat then I'll be back a little before 5 and open the hangout.

Hope to see y'all there!

Wouldn't have minded a group connect up. But 11pm Sorry Kath, I'm giving it serious ZZZZZ's around then.
Maybe we can arrange a Later Sunday afternoon (European time zones) connection soon, say after US's Gamesday?
7Pm for the UK would be around 1pm Central time?

Can't make it next Sunday as I'm off to Leeds for a weeks Microsoft Training course. (Five minutes walk from the Royal Armouries)

Because of Kathryn's encouragement, I'll be also hanging out on G+ a bit more when I paint once I get a webcam. If anyone feels like popping in look for Jennifer Tallman. I will have it up while I paint, no particular time.

It was nice to have some company!

I'm definitely wanting to do something more scheduled and after GD sounds good to me. I'd like to do a brief discussion but it wouldn't take long and the rest of the time would be just painting and having fun. And since I'm going to be off and on Google+ anyway, if anyone sees me, feel free to send me a chat request.

Hopefully I can get online again a bit tonight and after GD we'll look at a schedule that a majority can agree on.
