AoW Barbarian

Hey, I painted this guy up for a challenge over on WAMP. The theme is \"Revenge is a dish best served cold\" and I like the movie \"Conan the Barbarian\" and the scene where they get all dolled up in the body paint (looks cool, but hardly functional camo I think...). So here he is. Any thoughts?

Vote if you like too!

OH Scott what colour did you use as the base tone for the skin?
Because to be honest it looks like classic British milk bottle white skin instead of tanned vigourous Barbarian.

And I\'d seriously suggest losing whatever you are using as a backdrop and create a better one as I think it\'s affecting your cameras metering system.
Paint a piece of card/Styrene sheet with Vallejo Neutral Grey and us that instead, it\'ll work better in the long run.

Could do with a switch in Backgrounds. The skin was supposed to represent some white body paint, but I\'ve clearly missed it as nobody seems to get it. I actually painted the flesh underneath then built it up to where it is now. I got the same sort of feedback on WAMP and it just plain isn\'t working. I\'ll have to tinker with it for sure. Likely patches of the base skin tone showing through in places, and maybe even some blood across the mini might help it out.

Thanks though Mike!

I vote for him as Guvnor!

I think, however, in the Conan movie, he was still more flesh toney....

I knew what you were going for right away...

But, it kind of reminds me of the delicious Rae Dawn Chong:

Wasn\'t it still Swarz...Schwarz...Arnold, in that movie with her?

I thought the skin was painted with ash like aboriginals are sometimes shown in movies...or a paint made from ash.

Maybe I was wrong if it is to be white paint.

Either way it looks like both the images presented by vike combined, so if that is what you were going for you nailed it head on!

The hair just seems a little dark for Arnold...but in the movie, it was probably a lots of lighting reflections so yours hair looks better than his anyway. lol

And I voted him a 9, just in case you couldn\'t tell I liked it in this post.

I will admit that I did not realize that the skin was suppose to be white body paint however I still think the skin looks great! Seeing this mini painted this way makes me feel like this mini was meant to be painted just like how you did. Great work!

I actually toned him down into a little more flesh toney style this morning. It\'s for a comp and the people who would be voting on it didn\'t thin kthat much of it so I opted to change it some. I appreciate the responses!

Thing was I was worried if I did it too flesh toney that people wouldn\'t get what I was shooting for, and that it would look even MORE like just a sloppy painted fig. I kind of like him in IRL and if I was just painting him fo rme I woulda kept him but it\'s for a ladder battle for top spot over on WAMP and I gotta cater to the wants of the voters for sure.....

Also I got some just plain ole good advice from lots of people, so thanks guys! I still feel it was a step forward, and the metal work got improved this morning but it wasn\'t the worst thing ever I think. Thanks again all, and please, please, don\'t ever feel like you would be a jerk to give me some crit\'s. I love \'em all!

for white ash why not use pigment powder. stipple it on and then seal with lighter fluid.
it will have a slight texture and a vary matt look with bits of the flesh showing through.

Super good idea! I think I even had some of the right powder to use Chris! Wish I would have thought of that! Exlamation marks rule!

Good tip for sure amigo, thanks.

I knew exactly what you were going for on that, Scott. My favorite scene from one of my favorite movies.

I think Andrea did a 72mm version of Conan and in the example I\'ve seen painted up for that they do usually tend to tone the white down.

Still, I think it\'s brill. Cheers!

Couldn\'t get back to respond yesterday, sorry.
Hmmmn, Difficult thing to try to represent on a 28mm mini (or any mini for that matter). As Chris suggested the use of pigment grains might work better or areas of normal skin tone showing through in the contact areas.

One thing I have been meaning to mention to you that you might find of use as you\'ve said you\'re priming grey is the technique of underpainting. Eric Louchard used to have a very good article about it on his Lone Brushman site but that is now defunct.
However the basis is to initially prime the model then repaint, with a very thin white, the skin areas. Eric used to allow the darker recesses to remain \"dark\" and this helped give a greater contrast level for skin tones.
I\'ve used it a couple of times and it\'s worked pretty well, best IMO on flesh, Orc or Human.

Much, much appreciated guys!

Freak- That movie is Quest for fire, one fo the all time greats! I laugh at so many scenes, and if you want to see a really young Ron Pearlman that that\'s the one for you.

I\'m off, but I\'ll check out that article later. I think after a little more time on the metals, hair, and tinkering on the skin it looks improved. I\'ll post later.

I\'m having the best weekend ever. Got hammered last night with my Brother for his birthday, going golfing with the gang right away and then off to enjoy a deck somewhere in this beauty 28 degree day (celsius!) with not a cloud in the sky. First day of holidays too!

Thanks again amigo\'s!

I think it\'s better now. Thanks again guys! I am going to try that undercoating thingy from that article very soon, looks like something to give a shot, so thanks for that as well.

Hi Scott, my initial reaction to this mini wasn\'t great, simply that I read it was a body paint representation, didn\'t think it had worked, & moved on. The chap\'s been in my head all weekend though. I have come around to really liking the overall tone/effect of him. Then I just read above that you\'ve reworked the skin, aaargh, how does it look? It looks great. Well done, he just took me a few days to warm up to, I\'m off to vote on him. Congratulations on a very striking mini  B.

I think it works a bit better now!

Cheers Mr. Butcher!

@freakinacage....

as Scott already said, it\'s QUEST FOR FIRE. Actually, it was an interesting movie for it\'s time.

Thanks guys.

BPI, That\'s pretty cool, thanks for telling me. Well I\'m done with it now, really enjoyed it after all. Still take any CC available.

Still looks good. Maybe the background doesn\'t need to be so dark now that the skin isn\'t as white.
