AoW Goblin King

I\'m gonna take a stab at this dude. He\'s just screamin\' out to represent Grom the Paunch from Warhammer so he\'s destined to hit the table and squish some elves eventually. But in the mean time I plan on taking a little extra time on him. This will represent me reaching for the stars! I am going to submit him for your rating when all is said and done and I\'m gonna pull out all the stops and go for a... seven! This will be quite a feat for me and I plan on enjoying the journey but I will take ANY and all advice along the way. That way if I fall short I can blame the person sending me advice (Clever!).

Here he is. He\'s based on a little lump of green stuff that\'s had a mix of fine and coarse sand white glued to it. The base was then painted VGC SS-black brown, drybrushed GW Foundation Khemri Brown then again with Foundation Dheneb Stone. Then washed heavily with Devlan Mud. After the model is done it\'ll be mostly covered with silfor tufts and some static grass most likely. That\'s where I am at for now. Suggestions, tips, hopes and prayers always welcome.

Thanks.

Well I think you can definitely make it

I like the base, looks natural, the mini itself looks like it has some definite places for character, the heads the axe. I can\'t wait to see the progress you make on him.... and keep a tally of the elves you kill :innocent:

Darklord: Thanks Amigo! I\'ll do my best! I don\'t know how much time I\'ll have this weekend. The wife\'s going out to get drunk so I gotta run after the kids solo. We\'ll see how much time I get, but my kids seem to sense when I am anxious to get at something and save their extra level of bastardness for weekends like this.

I\'m really going to try and push the contrast on my metallics and the flesh. I\'m thinking of starting the flesh of at Orkhide shade and working it up with some bleached bone. Any thoughts?

sounds fine, i may be tempted to use space wolves grey instead though. some shading with a purple wash gives a nice look to it as well

Sold! I\'ll give your idea a go! Space wolves grey it is. I think the cool grey will make for some nice transitions on the model. I\'m trepidatious (Bitchin\' word!) about using the purple but it\'s all about learnin\' so I\'ll try that. Would the GW purple wash be okay? Full strength or diluted?

Okay not much work done tonight. A little bit of chainmail which I started from Black/Boltgun Metal to boltgun metal to chainmail. Washed it with a mix of 1 part black ink to 1 part brown ink to two parts water, then tried to pick out the highlights in chainmail followed by some mithril silver atop the parts I figured would catch the most light. Not that happy, think I should probably put wash over it and maybe try the highlights again...
IMG_0458.jpg

Then acting on Darklord\'s suggestion got the flesh basecoat of Orkhide shade on in about 4 thin coats. Man was it quicker when I didn\'t thin my paint and I worked straight from the bottle... of paint.
IMG_0460.jpg

Then I tried the first layer of highlights with Orkhide shade and maybe 10% Space wolves grey. Still not sure about the color mix, but I am commited and I will see where Darklords suggestion takes me. The purple wash to come much later still has me nervous.
IMG_0462.jpg

So I want to end up with a really lightened skin tone. Probably at least 3 more layers with adding more space wolves to the mix, then maybe a few more with some bone added for the belly, biceps and parts of the face. Then we\'ll see what all the purple wash stuff is really about! Fun to try new things! Anyone else feel free to chime in and offer tips and suggestions, I\'m focusing on trying new mixes and techniques.

@Darklord: Thanks for the advice, can I please call you by another name? All this \"Acting on Darklord\'s advice\" sounds creepy even to me as I type it. When this model DOES eventually hit the table and people remark on it it\'d be less insane to say something other than \"Darklord said I should try this.\". Thanks amigo!

One more layer of flesh highlights and I threw a muddy wash over the chainmail to bring it back down. Worked the face in but not thrilled about the eyes... Eye did them with a burnt cadmium red, then filled \'em in with some brighter red then a really small dot of ivory w/a little red. Don\'t look too \"alive\" to me. ah well.
IMG_0465.jpg

The teeth were charadon granite mixed up with bone in a couple layers, and I liked those. Tounge had a purple wahs and seems to have improved that. WE\'ll see if I can hit a 7/10 with this one. LOT\'S of work to do...

I tired a final highlight of bleached bone in a few places, and I\'ll have to tone it down on the scars across the belly I think.

So I think he\'s done from the waist down. So far I\'m really enjoying this one.

Question... What do you guys do for the fingernails/claws on a model like this? I\'m at a loss.

Looks like he\'s coming along. Any chance of a close up of the skin - it\'s looking a bit chalky in these shots - but I think it\'s just the photo.
From what you have I think so purple tones are going to work really nicely.

I\'ll try and get a close up shot, but my camera wasn\'t built for this (She canna handle the close ups! If I get much closer, she\'s gonna BLOW!).

Truthfully if I regard it with an impassionate eye the skin does look a little chalky in real life. I suspect I wasn\'t watering down my paint enough, or maybe the paint was drying on the palette and getting a little thick by the time it hit the model (I worked on it over a couple days) or a combination of both. Sigh.

I don\'t know if I\'ll have the courage to hit the skin with the purple. I\'m actually really pleased with the work on it so far and would hate to change that by trying the purple. I may have to save that for another model I can \"hide\" better in my army if it doesn\'t turn out. It\'s easily the miniature I\'m most proud of painting to date, and I\'m still hopeful of getting that coveted \"7\" when it hits the mean streets of CMoN in about a week or so.

But I will try to get some close ups.

the picture didnt really mean anything, i was just trying to clean up the background it was on and then found other options, it was my first day with my GIMP program and like 3 am in the morning heh

I hope you werent bothered by it

I like the progress of your model. I am kind of in agreement with the chalky texture of the skin, this is just a personal feeling but he seems too light for a ork. Maybe you might want to think about another green wash over the top of that, I guess it is all personal preference

For the claws, maybe try a brownish / dirty look, or you could also go with a greysh look

No I wasn\'t at all bothered by it, I just didn\'t get what the picture even was. I could only make out teeth.

The skin is light but it\'s representative of a goblin with a heavy dose of troll runnin\' through his blood. I do dig the color, and I am glad I tried it out.

The chalkiness could be an issue come vote day!

to be honest, more than likely once he is finished up the skin wont be an issue

I think right now, since parts of him are still primed black, the skin is what the eye is drawn too. I also like how the scar on the belly turned out, looks like you worked on that
