Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Artisan..?

I\'m a devotee of the OOP / rare / limited miniature. The upside of which (for this thread) is that I spend a few minutes each day browsing eBay.com.

I have, and I know you must have seen the auctions for pro / master painted.

Rarely do they meet my definition of master.

My question is, given the scoring system on coolminiornot.com, when should someone be considered a novice, journeyman, master and finally artisan?

Interesting twist on the Pro painted discussion. The topic of \"Pro\" painted minis on eBay comes up here often, just use the search button and you can find tons of the.

You took it to the next level though which is cool

I would say a Novice is when you have painted a mini at all, so from me in the 2-3 range. Theirs paint on there, no highlighting or shading and it can be pretty sloppy.

Aprentice I would say is 4-5, that\'s when you get all the colours in the right spot and some shading and highlighting, often using \'easier\' techniques like dips and drybrushing.

Journeyman is that 6-7 Range, where you have definately well defined shades, highlights, shadows, composition is important at this stage, and colour choice can be more important then perfect blends.

Master is the 8-9 range. At this point everything is technically perfect. It\'s near impossible to find a flaw with the mini.

In the last range of 9-10 not only is everything perfect but it\'s composed, balanced, converted, put in a diorama, something that transcends an amazingly painted mini and becomes art.

isnt that obvious..... we all already are master painters.

lol.

seriously i know im better than i was two years ago, but i still see my stuff and say i suck.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

hey who was that guy who came on here once and started touting he was a \"master painter\" bout a year ago? he painted a conan model?

anyhow if someone finds that thread link it and you will be find some interesting dialogue.

wasn\'t his name alex castro???
sensitive guy...good painter though, even if he was settin\' himself up for abuse with the whole i am the master title...

i think that gilvan\'s post pretty much covers it....the only thing that i would add to this, is that it\'s the fans who decide who goes where...the fan knows who the master painter is, and who the up an comin\' guys are...everyone knows an amazin\' paintjob when they see it...

even a guy who considers himself a great painter will only see the things he could improve in a paintjob...i bet if ya asked anyone in the top 50 if they think they are master painters, they would say no, they still have new heights to reach...

the whole pro-painted on e-bay thing makes me sick, but then again i see some mediocre painters make a livin\' with army paintin\' services, so i guess they are pros...
what really kills me is when ya see studio quality used as a title, and the minis look like they were painted by a blind man...
a lot of hard work(for very low rates) goes into maintainin\' a level of quality for a company\'s diplay minis, and then guys who are all thumbs wanna come along and represent like they could work for a studio...

cheers
jah

I think Gilvan Blight\'s categorisations are pretty much spot on

Tonka, if you want to give a name to a class above master then artisan, for me, would be for the cream of the crop, those with total mastery of the craft but also something more: artistic spark, flair, whatever you\'d call it, that sets their minis apart from just being skilled on a technical level. That\'s the final 5% maybe that many great painters just won\'t reach.

Oh dear, it was even worse than I\'d feared right on day one. Here it is in all its glory:

Yet another forum from which he exited, stage right, after trying and failing to brag his way to general acclaim. I\'m surprised he didn\'t pack up his toys when he left the sandbox.

Yep, that about sums him up.

It would be nice to think so but I\'m sure there\'s at least one in the top 20 that thinks sh... they\'ve reached the pinnacle :D

To be fair, it\'s easy to think your poo doesn\'t stink when you are simply a local painter. When I first started taking commissions, the community I worked for called me a \"master\" painter, and paid me pretty well for my work.

Then I came here and realized that my best work was getting a 6.5 (at the most). It was hard to reconcile the two opinions and my pride sure took a hit. I was now being compared to the world\'s best painters and saw a long road ahead. Personally, I relish the challenge - but I can see how some people might be frustrated by this.

it\'s a toss up between lots more practice and an industrial amount of rat poison.

fortunately for people i can\'t afford the rat poison so i\'m having to continue practicing lol

Up until about 6 months ago the term \"Master Painted\" was still a secure word used by real painters just like \"pro painted\" was until they hijacked it.

Any ideas for new descriptive words/phrases anyone?

Showcase / Collector Quality.

And I\'m not going to consider rehashing what I once suggested as Competition Standard as they have changed so dramatically over the last 5 years.

I believe that like with many things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you believe yourself to be a \" pro painter \" then go ahead, advertise it as such, it still doesn\'t mean that i\'ll use my hard earned cash to buy any of your mini\'s. When it comes to people like El Cid though, my grandad gave me a brilliant piece of advice to keep my feet on the ground, quote: \" Aim to be the best in everything that you do in life, but don\'t forget that someone, somewhere at some time, will be better at it than you. So don\'t go shining your nuts just yet! \"
God, I miss him.

How \'bout this for a new descriptor: CMON 9+ or CMON 9-10. That\'s something that would actually mean something.

Hang on a second, what am I saying... :cussing:

people use those descriptions already mike for £5 a pop paint jobs lol

@Einion lol the amount of people who advertise their coolmini rank in their auctions and surprisingly fly up through the rankings is amazing.

oh I have to have my pennies worth..lol

I must admit I use pro-painted when selling my miniatures, as a professional illustrator and am happy with what i produce (ok nowhere near top 50, but still dreaming)
But it does annoy me when dipped in paint miniatures are advertised as pro painted.
as to the Castro guy, you cant knock his ability just his attitude.
