I'll second that. I love the freehand tattoos. I'm getting ready to start some freehand practice, and I'm petrified - if it looks half as good as your attempt I'll be mightily pleased.

Good advice from various tutorials was to practice the design on paper first before touching the mini. I also lightly drew the designs on in pencil and then went over them with paint. A bit too enthusiastically in places, hence the need for a cleanup.

We'll get there together!

Bigun Progress

I did quite a bit of work on Bigun tonight although it doesn't look like it.

1. I decided that he needed some battle scars. So I used wood glue to make some - you can see most of them on the pics below.
2. I sharpened up the tattoos and then glazed some skintone over them. I haven't done too much because the highlights still have to come in on top as well.
3. I've started working some shading in - it's not the neatest, but I'm happy to clean it up once I'm done. I'd rather get them in the right places and the darkness I want.

Hey ten ball. I want to go for a combination of older and "getting older" scars. So some will definitely be getting more pink and others possibly a light touch of purple. Any suggestions from your experience?

I also made them all raised to different degrees because I figured that giants were unlikely to have particularly skilled surgeons on hand.

good idea on different aged scars.
i would paint them all the same, pinkish red with highlights - then wash individual ones back at different levels with the skin tone.

Old ones tend to be just a lighter shade of the skin (at least they look like on my legs for example ), the color not really different (also because of the raised surface people tend to highlight it more).

purple or other colors: I'd not really use them as too many different colors give a clown look , except of course if you want to show exactly that they are relative (1-2 days) new. In that case you can have many colors added from purple through blue, green, red to yellow (altough these colors I saw mostly when I bumped into something, so good for bruises, not really scar colors). Just keep them subtle.

Like a lot of people I've collected a good few scars over the years, the largest is down my stomach (Laproscopy, that nearly put me in a wooden overcoat) that's gone dull grey/pink since '81, dog bite/knife/tool injury scars on wrist and hands have paled down to be lighter than basic skin colour due to being in the sunlight.
All the others ( no I won't take photos due to where they are) remain standard British Milk Bottle White Skin Tone.

So I'd suggest that the bulky scars should be paler for old and a darker purple/pink tinge for fresher ones.

Oh and nice advancements! Tatoos look a lot more tatoo and much less than a warpaint.

I'm with Dragonsreach and the others.. scar tissue is always a bit paler as it does not get suntanned at the same level. So you can try pink tinges on the newer ones and paler on the oldest ones or combine both to your fancy.
If you feel brave you can even try to left the "stitches" on on the newest ones for an even fresher look. <-- just an idea

Thank you all for your feedback! So the consensus seems to be (which I agree with based on my own scars and some Google-fu) slight pink for newer ones and a slightly paler tone of the skintone for the older ones.

YYou see I knew it...when someone starts to bang out wonderfully painted minis and they haven't eve. Done 10 models yet I always say their probably some amazing artist in some other medium and or subject matter and BAMMO a canvas artist ..love it love it all.the owl twine is my favorite and btw I was a fighter and didn't accumulate that much external scar damage in my whole Career, so this leaves me a questions :WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO SHELAGH!!!!

Lol - those are Google images. I do have a few scars of my own (more than three anyway) but none I've photographed. I can give you a rundown of cause and effect if you like.

You should see close ups of my hands, the guys freak out when see my hands in close up, especially if I work with something that will stain them like red cabbage or portobello mushrooms. << Professional chef for more then 24 years I>> I can also cook !

I'm impressed Teronus - cooking is definitely not something I enjoy. I can, but I'd rather do one of a hundred different things first. Fortunately my man understands me so he does most of the cooking - I wash up.
