The skin is looking amazing! Maybe for the lumps, you can make them transist into "normal" flesh tone (pinkish?); Just a thought.

looking forward to see your progress.

Cheers,

I love you guys! I was just starting to lose confidence in where I was going and then you lot come along. It's just a case of feeling like I've been going nowhere slowly.

Like the direction your heading so keep at it, agree the addition of other colours could really push it further, maybe some purple or red glaze in joint protusions would work

I've over-thinned the paint a few times which made it very frustrating to work with! I ultimately want the paint to be transparent enough for earlier layers to show through, but thick enough that I can control where it's going.

Use reflection to see where it's wet and where it's not wet, move you'r mini around and use reflection, you will then have a tool to see how much there is and then be able to spread that layer evenly. Remove excess paint always, even if you think there's no paint in there there is! Does not matter if you don't see the paint, look at the reflection. Do that layer after layer after layer don't count you will go nutso.

It's lookin good. don't forget to have fun. By all means learn, but risk some mistakes too - push your highs too high and your darks real low and add colors and tints like others have said. it's only paint!

Though you still have a long way to go, I might think about giving one of the pair (hopefully the little guy!) a glaze of a different color to start to see them as two individuals with slightly different coloration. I really like the periwinkle color you're using, and the fact that it's not super bright means you could really make the little gunner pop if you want. Of course, if you have other ideas in mind, do what you want! It's looking great!

@Teronus - I need to learn patience it seems. :)

@Zab - Oh I'm definitely having fun :D, I'd just started to get bogged down in trying to get things perfect.

@SaintToad - It's a great suggestion and I'm a bit ahead of you on this one for a change! Still some work to do.

I'm onboard with the beige highlights but thinking bout what krule said the Reds worked into his mouth /nose elbows knuckles etc really would look good...and when I say red I mean pink ...as a desaturated red is in match with a desaturated blue like the skin color....try to always use your color theory rules it's as important as blending etc etc...every color I use its on the fly ,but never just a guess of "hey let me try this color or that color!" Always make your color choices a "DELIBERATE CHOICE!". As a quick guide when you shade you shade by using cool complimentary colors and when you highlight you use warm analogous colors..warm as in beige added/cool as in blues ,blue greys etc added ...now this is only a guideline things are purely situational ...in the case of the oaks skin ide have used a red purple mixed with the skin tone for the shading adding more and more until I get to the darkest parts where no light hits.armpits ,front of neck under the chin pocket.inner thigh and groin back of knees hamstrings.than ode have added in pink to the mouth chin etc.

im starting to see you skin color I love light colored skin tones especially troll blood ...it looks great these that I've given just shows many ways that artists do different things..you could also use dark flesh and or rhinos hide and or scorched brown. When choosing color side pick a small part of the model let's say the finger and id paint up this tiny part using what I want and see if it world coherently with the rest of the projected parts of the model receiveing those colors as well.
this is looking very nice so far.

Hey BAM, Thats some really awesome advice. Thanks for posting it... even if it wasn't meant for me. :p
Do you perhaps have any articles that you'd recommend dealing with colour theory in shading/highlighting or mini painting in general?

@Maenas - I'm glad you keep checking in. :)

@BAM - *hugs* Thank you for the advice. I decided to use purple/pink in the shadow areas to keep the cool feel. I was wondering what to use for my final highlight colours and I'll definitely be trying a warmer tone and seeing what happens.

@Khonner - Awesome. I'll be sure to pop by and have a look. :)

@YetiSA - Here are two I know BAM believes everyone should read to get you started: 1) Let It Flow - The Art of Thinning Acrylic Paints and 2) Zenithal Lighting and the Stop Sign Rule

I haven't had much time to paint over the last couple of days. Being in someone else's house means you can't really take over the whole dining room to paint for extended periods of time. But I'm happy with the work I have gotten done and will post pics when I get a chance.

I hope you're all doing well!

Looking good. The colour is awesome and it's got some good depth. If I can make one suggestion, i still find the skin tone of the little guy a little closer to the big guy. It'll probably come out more once the armour, etc. is painted but at the moment I still find them a little tricky to distinguish.

Thanks YetiSA - I wanted to keep them similar, but Smigg (the little guy) is quite a lot darker IRL. I'll see what happens once more of the armour etc is laid in, but I'll keep it in mind.

He's a lovely colour and it works well with the cream. Top work on the skin shading. I'm looking forward to seeing how you harmonise the armour on him.
