Are GW\'s new Chaos Black and Skull White sprays primer?

Title says it all. I work at a FLGS and we\'ve been told that GW no longer sells their \"Black Primer\". They now ship a can that just says \"Chaos Black\". And in the new White Dwarf I noticed a bit about priming, and they showed the can of \"Chaos Black\" next to a can of \"Skull White\" and represented them as primers. I guess the \"White Primer\" is next on their hit list.

Does anyone know if these new cans really are primer, or are they just the same old sprays that they\'ve been selling under those names? If I recall correctly, the black primer wasn\'t actually as dark as Chaos Black paint when it was dry (it had sort of a dusty appearance), but I haven\'t had a chance to compare. And I really can\'t be advising people to use this stuff as primer if it really is just spray paint.

And if they are primers, why don\'t they say \"Primer\" on the can?

Please advise.

I think that it was simply a re-brand of the same old spray. If memory serves it happened when they released the various small colour cans (Shadow Grey etc), which they don\'t do any more. I\'ve never noticed any difference between the two cans and mixed them when I ran out of the old cans.

I\'m guessing that the reason they don\'t say primer on the can is a clever sales pitch, as its perfectly feasable to just spray your minis black and then paint their eyes (you know the people who also use a 1/2\" brush to paint minis).

I\'ve had my Chaos Black spray for quite a while now. I\'m pretty much sure that it\'s the same as the old \'Black Primer\' because my friend used to have it and I saw no difference between them.

I would never advise my friends to pay 10$ or more for a can of primer... i usually use krylon or any diy store brand-blk grey white they work great close to 3$ per can. even tried armory primer once- had to strip it off at once

Damn right there. I just pop into Halfords and get can twice as big for less money

I stopped useing spray primer years ago, hard to do that stuff in an apartment bathroom after all. :D But really, i saw both the old black primer and chaos black cans just last week being used and i saw no differance at all. I\'m pretty sure they just repackaged the same spray and dropped the word primer so they can sell the same can to both people needing a black spray paint or a black primer.

Personally I has some issues with chaos black primer. The new version came out way to glossy, almost like I varnished the thing.
The effect is rather inconsistent sometimes I have it sometimes I don\'t. Whether it is related to humidity or just bad bottle of primer I am not sure

Funny you should say that. Its the same with their varnish too!
I remember Orkydave (I think) having varished a mini with GW matt and it ended up blindingly shiney.
Stuff I bought seems to be decent though..hmmmm. Quality Control\'s a bit of a foreighn issue with GW I think.

Conditions effect the chaos black spray - a lot...

If the can is cold, it goes shiney.
If the can isn\'t shaken enough, it goes shiney.
If the mini is cold, it goes shiney.
If the mini is sprayed in the damp/cold, it goes shiney.
If the mini is left to dry in a cold/damp area, it goes shiney.

Way I get round it (living in the UK we get a lot of damp, cold weather!), is to keep all my cans indoors. Prepare the mini(s) to spray indoors. Get the garage emptied of things like cars (shed is also good). Shake the can indoors. Go out spray the mini in short sharp bursts, and then bring indoors to dry. Since I\'ve been following this process I\'ve never had a shiney undercoat.

The alternative is to move somewhere that stays a permanent 20 degrees, but moving house/continent is a tad extreame to get a good undercoat (or is it ???)

Yeah, I like that primer test. That\'s a great idea, and that in part is what made me really question the Chaos Black spray. I guess to really get a definitive answer I should conduct my own test. I think I still have some Black Primer around somewhere.
