Are plastic miniatures okay?

Which plastic figures are you talking about. Historical?
Dragon, their Gen2 1:35 scale figures are fantastic, probably the best plastic figures out there.
There is Tamiya, MiniArt have some nice figures. All these figures blow anything GW puts out in plastic at about 2/3 the cost. A 5 figure set from Dragon will cost $18-$24.
For fantasy, other than the prepaint plastic from D&D or Rackham, there is not much plastic kits made.
Also, no you are not cheating yourself doing plastic, The minis are easy to cut and convert, you don't need a saw to cut minis like metal just a hobby knife.

vern is correct. the main thing is to _like_ what you are working on. when you get into converting, it's not going to matter what the figure is made of. but the plastic is far easier to work with.

Yes, if I remember correctly you were the one who was asking what minis to buy. BUY PLASTIC. It's ALOT easier to work with and definitely a better choice for a beginner modeler.

If you would like to test some plastic miniatures for free, Mantic and Wayland Games are giving away a free plastic Ghoul sprue - no cost to you at all, not even postage. All you need to do is fill out a form, which signs you up to the newsletter, and you'll get a shiny plastic sprue posted to you. You can see how you get on with them over metal and resin then :)
