Are the French in trouble?

I was reading Time magazine yesterday and there was an article entitled The 100 most influential People in the World. The list included the usual candidates, like George W. Bush and Kim Jong-il, but also included entertainers like Oprah Winfrey and Quentin Tarrentino. It also mentioned Bill Clinton and called him the most famous unemployed person in the world. A political scientist who was interviewed for the article speculated at Mr. Clinton\'s future prospects. These included Mayor of NY City, Senator from any state, or Secretary of the U.N.! That last one I found very funny in light of the fact that I don\'t recall him having any foreign policy (unless you count Swedish Stewardesses).

The last job that was suggested he might try for was President of France! This \"scientist\" had figured he was eligible because his place of birth was located inside of the area of land known as the Louisiana Purchase. Since this was a former protectorate of France, and the President of France could be from a current or former protectorate!

Now wouldn\'t that be funny? Little Willy, French President. I suppose he would make a good French President, he\'s got experience, and he\'s a lover, not a fighter. The only thing the French would have to worry about is keeping their young women away from him.

So how does our European contingent feel about this? Especially our french members.

Well it couldn\'t be any worse than the actual politiciens we have IMHO. Whatever their political color is, I feel that for at least 10 years now, they\'ve lost all the credit they ever had.

hummm I wouldn\'t mind. Plenty of women around to share But unfortunatly I\'m pretty much sure he\'d never get pass the 10% of votes.

Oh and monica is definetly not pretty. I ate next to her once in NYC and ...well... :|~

I wouldn\'t take that list too seriously myself. It\'s pretty random. Tony Blair, British PM, didn\'t even make it. I know he\'s not exactly influential compared to the likes of Bush, but surely in the top 100? His influence on European trade issues alone must equate to billions of dollars per year, not to mention war type scenarios in Iraq and bosnia (though that was a while ago).

It doesn\'t translate at all: to come = décharger dans le sens où l\'entend Sade.
By the way if Monsieur Clinton is a lover and not a fighter, he would have avoid some bloodshed in Cote d\'Ivoire and he can not be more unskilled than our native politicians, donc pourquoi pas, de toute façon je ne vote plus depuis des lustres.
I also suspect the fact Lousiana isn\'t a former protectorate of the French Republique a major embarassement.

My knowledge of French history is very poor , but hopefully I can learn something from this thread.

Napoleon sold Louisiana to the fledgling USA in part because needed the money and in part because he hoped it would become something that the USA and Britian would fight over. Napoleon did not declare himself emporer until 1804?, so France was a still a Republic at the time of the Louisiana purchase.

Astorderire, you\'re saying that even though the Republic of France owned Lousiana it wasn\'t considered a protectorate? Or does a protectorate have to have been a protectorate of the France after Napoleon III for purposes of this election law?

As far as I know, you must have the french nationnality to be elected... I suppose the protectorate stuff was writen in order to allow people born in a french protectorate with a french nationnality to keep their right to be elected even if the country they were born in is no longer french. I clumsily tried to write that a constitution erase the previous one and I\'m sure the notion of protectorate (that may be present in the 5th Republique constitution) does not include Louisiana. My bilingual dictionnary is on fire!

That makes perfect sense, thank you for exlpaining it. So even if Louisiana was a protectorate a long time ago, it wasn\'t a protectorate when Clinton was born there, so it doesn\'t count. You and your bilingual dictionary deserve a drink.

But make sure that you get the alchohol and your dictionary gets the glass of water and not the other way around.
